Writing A Memoir Using Mind Maps
So before we get into the details of how to start writing a memoir using a mind map I want to define both a memoir and a mind map so we’re all on the same page in this conversation. -conversation. A memoir is a story drawn from real life. This means that a memoir is not fiction. It is also known as creative nonfiction. It is important to learn how to use writing techniques to develop your setting, dialogue and multidimensional characters to show your readers what is happening in this snapshot of your life.
One of the most powerful strategies I use regularly in writing is called mind mapping. Tony Buzan formalized this technique in the early 1970s. A mind map is a tool to help people organize their thoughts and develop strong associations connected to the central theme you are developing. . As a side note I always use less color when I do this because I like it more and the color and shapes you use opens up your right brain, so the creative juices flow better.
For me making a mind map is the beginning of all my writing In the middle of your paper write MY MEMOIR or any title you can think of. Draw a circle in the middle. Think about the main ideas you can include. Please be relaxed about it. Nothing you write is written in stone. Ask yourself some short questions like Who am I? or Where Am I From? Draw a line from the middle to the short questions and draw a circle around the question. then draw a line from the circle, and add thoughts like blonde hair, blue eyes, tall, musical, good swimmer and so on. As you continue to do this you will soon have a large paper full of ideas and thoughts.
So after you have a basic and flexible mind map, take the next step. That step is to jump in and write more. Make a rough draft. Let your energy just flow. Allow the words to appear on the page. Look at your mind map, add color if you like it. You can doodle on it. This is your creation and really helps your creativity. Let the images appear in your mind. Don’t worry about the sequence of events. All this is subject to change, and will be arranged later. You need paper material to use. As you work on your first draft I would like to remind you what one of my favorite authors said “The creation of a thousand forests is in an acorn” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
