On Page SEO Best Practices

Optimizing a web site is like putting your business downtown. When it comes to offline practices, all businesses try to choose a high-interest location: inside a business center, in a mall or on a crowded street. Putting your business online has a similar process. Optimization will place your web site in the top search results, which means getting more traffic and generating more sales.

There are some key elements to consider when doing On Page SEO Optimization. We have compiled a list of best practices.

Robots.txt – all pages must include Robots.txt. Robots.txt essentially tells the engines how to index your site.

Sitemap.xml – a sitemap provides a list of all your pages to search engines and makes it easier for them to index your pages.

Domain Registration – engines place a higher value on domains with a longer turnaround time. In our experience, five years or more is good.

Meta Keywords – each page should have a unique combination of keywords. In our experience, five keywords per page is best. Be careful in choosing the best keywords for your site, make sure they have high potential (high number of searches and low competition).

Meta Description – search engines tend to use the description to gather information on the topic/theme of the page. A well-written description should be no more than 160 characters with the strongest phrase included in it. A good description results in a higher CTR from your site listing after a search.

RSS Feed (if possible) – not all sites have RSS in their site updates. With the section of your newsletter you can include it as a part of the site.

Title Tag – the title should describe the page and use the strongest keyword/keywords (don’t overload the title with keyword phrases; concentrate on the strongest one or two keywords the most well describes the topic of the web page). Search engines will only display the first 70 characters of your title in the SERP so use those 70 characters to create a high impact relevant title for your page.

Plain text on the page – search engine spiders read basic body text the best. Try to avoid using too much Flash and Java – search engines are better at indexing Flash and Java content, but be sure to include the information that search engines need to do so. Friendly URLs – some search engines (with some exceptions, such as Google) will not index any pages that include URL characters such as question marks, ampersands, equals signs etc. yet. a more friendly experience on the page for users and search engines.

Image Alt Tags – images can have Alt tags that are indexed for relevance and provide an opportunity to strengthen your keywords as well as drive traffic from image searches.

Image File Names – images will be indexed separately from your site and generate traffic if the file name is descriptive of the image content. It is best to use photos named with keywords because it strengthens your image for image searches.

Use this list to help improve your own search engine optimization efforts. We will be the first to admit that there is some debate about the effectiveness of some of these practices. There is no debate, however, how implementing best practices can only improve your overall optimization efforts.
