How to Increase Your Reading Retention Rate

Our reading retention rate depends on how active we are in the learning process. This is so frustrating! Not to mention the amount of time wasted. There are some things we can do to improve the rate of reading retention and avoid unnecessary re-reading.

Before starting to read the first page, take a few minutes to create a strategy plan. First, why the decision to read this information? Determine if it is a job that you need to study in great detail or perhaps you are looking for more specific information. Another question to ask is, what information do you need? Maybe for study purposes or to want to know how something is made. Maybe you’re just interested in the topic. By asking these questions we prepare our brain and remind ourselves of what we really want to remember. The purpose of the reading is now established.

More information can be remembered if we are more active in our reading. This will involve making summaries as you read. There are different ways to create summaries, depending on individual preferences, however all summaries should contain only keywords. Don’t rewrite the book! Decide before reading what is the best summarizing method to use.

Write a main heading at the top of your page and then divide the page into three columns. The first column is usually for a main keyword, and the other two columns are for additional keywords related to the main keyword. The use of colors and small simple pictures whenever possible is especially encouraged during summarizing. By breaking the keywords into columns, the work will be easier to study later, and one can see at a glance what it is. Your rate of reading retention will be much higher if you make notes while you read.

Another summarizing technique is called the mind map, which has been a huge success for millions of people around the world. A mind map is a great idea for anyone struggling to remember their work. The most important thing about the mind map, is that it is not linear which facilitates the way our brain thinks. Start with the main concept in the center of the page. This can be a word or a picture that represents your main idea or topic. From this central point, branch out to the next main keyword. Then add more branches with more detailed keywords related to the main one. Ideally each branch should have its own unique color and only one keyword per branch. Again, using photos can greatly improve retention. A mind map is an easy way to capture information in the reading process. Since it is not in linear form, additional facts can easily be added to any of the branches.

For a high rate of reading retention we must be taught summarizing techniques at an early age. From as early as possible, children need to learn how to effectively summarize what they read. Then they learn to write ideas in their own words and study better in higher grades.

While reading, try to eliminate distractions. Your mind must be focused on the task at hand. If you are constantly interrupted, the rate of reading retention will be low.

It’s best to experiment with a few summarizing methods to find one you like. Often the type of information will also determine the summarizing technique that is best used. Once you become active in your reading, you will be surprised how the rate of reading retention increases.
