How To Make The Best Advanced Homemade Carp Fishing Boilies!
There is an alarming increase in carp anglers questioning why their ready baits never live up to expectations in terms of the catch results promised! There are many reasons for this but you can control them all! How do you achieve better than average results, when many anglers use the same or similar baits as you? This is a huge issue and a huge challenge to tackle for most of today’s big carp anglers! Read on to find out the answers and expert tips that will give you your power today!
I reached a point of realization years ago where it was clear to me that there was no point in trying to create a perfect bait paradigm without working with bait soaks and glugs. I mean of course bait dough that is extruded and shaped and heated in one way or another into boilies that are used as free baits or as hook baits!
I’m often short on time so making baits for me is about making things faster than normal, instead of continuing the old fashioned bait making methods I’ve been using since the late seventies involves rolling and boiling the dough to make boilies.
The fact that it took so long influenced my decision to cut steps in the process that I found meaningless. For example I started to stop heating baits and I went back to using paste like I did when I started carp fishing in the seventies when there were no bait companies that sold boiled baits and from at a time when everyone was making homemade baits.
Taking the step of boiling baits gave me a huge immediate improvement in results. I started fishing when other fishermen around me failed to catch. I also got a wider diversity of carp, from the syndicate waters I fished in that stage for about 8 years. I noticed that the behavior of the fish was very different with the baits that were not heated. The first step towards this comes from the shift from high protein boilies to more bird food and other bait themes as the cost of milk protein rises and rises.
This inadvertently led to me using coarse, soluble and open baits that break easily in the water. I still make boilies and warming baits that I form from homemade bait dough shapes. But in 1992 I stopped using bait rolling tables and manually made my homemade baits 3 or 4 times the normal size of other fishermen. (The normal size of tumors at that time was about 14 millimeters.)
I make baits anything up to 40 millimeters or larger. I still cook these baits and dry them; but that is where the similarities between conventional homemade boilies and conventional readymade boilies end. This is because I make boilies that are not possible to roll on a rolling table because they are too sticky or coarse or both sticky and coarse in nature. I love these baits and they have really moved my catches off the scale compared to normal, which at the moment, have been store bought types of conventional readymade boilies.
I don’t have time for bait rolling tables and I also take a great dislike to the similarities between homemade bait made with a rolling table and machine-rolled readymade bait; they are just too similar to give the ingredients I know I can use inside my homemade baits by making them as different as possible. So I ditched my bait rolling tables, even the very small micro boilie rolling table I own.
I no longer want baits that look like readymade baits. This is because I have discovered through very long experience over many years that fish are very selective eaters, on an individual basis, using very innovative defensive feeding behaviors when boilies are present.
Home-made boilies and store-bought boilies are very similar in conventional terms and the volumes used by the increasing number of anglers involved in carp fishing in the years from the nineties to last year 2000 showed me for sure that making boiled boilies at home is definitely not the way to maximize results.
I won’t go into how I started making my boilies differently here but the important step came in the early nineties when I was fishing all the time with crushed boilies instead of whole boilies. At that time I also started using PVA stringers on boilies in circles, but using baits that were cut several times. I use this method for my hook baits because I notice it produces faster bites and more fish. These things and other observations lead me to avoid the rolling bait step altogether.
In more recent times I have discovered very different paradigms for designing baits that maximize and optimize baits without heating the baits in any way and not making baits designed in the old HNV and BNV food type vale paradigms.
I have used these paradigms to design and manufacture my custom lures for 25 years. But being a writer I find myself in a position of having to constantly question every single aspect of the bait, take it back to its roots and re-examine the logic and processes and evolutions of thought that actually led to the conditioning of thousands of fishermen. to think that is how to design, make and use bait!
Just because many people think something, it does not automatically mean that this thinking is correct and more importantly it cannot be improved! Being a specialist in homemade baits, in testing and constant research on original research, original testing and breaking old rules and status quo thinking, it has revealed many important development achievements my results.
In part this happened in 2005 by finding me becoming a central hub of information from homemade bait-making anglers around the world and becoming a field tester and consultant for many bait companies. At certain times in the last 10 years I have found myself trying new versions of bait in many forms and changing them, almost every day for months and months on end for years. The fish feedback from this reality bait test seriously opened my eyes to new possibilities that truly transcend the entire food bait paradigm.
Of course few bait makers like to read this and especially if they are closed minded and stuck playing catch-up with old bait food thinking from years ago. Sometimes it takes a jolt of inspiration to change. A few years ago I had an interesting conversation with John Holt, a fisherman who deserves great respect for his catches. It was with his Grange bait that he started Mainline baits. I had many friends who fished Little Grange in Essex, and later in the early nineties I fished Big Grange next to it.
These were interesting times and many men at the time were selling leads as a part-time income. A while ago I saw Danny Fairbrass founder of Korda coming round to see his colleagues at Little Grange. We were all strangers before, even if I bumped into Kevin Knight or Zenon Bojko on the Mainline or maybe fished with a guy who made lures at the Nash factory nearby, it was all part of the scene.
I remember discussing lures on the way to Dream Lakes with Zenon a few times and felt that some of the ideas I came up with were a little out of the ordinary. John Holt approached me at the Carp show at Sandown Park a few years ago when I was standing doing my consultant bit for CC Moore, explaining aspects of some of the fluids and their possibilities.
This amazing big angler (whose boilie recipe builds Mainline baits,) was very excited to me about the many ideas and concepts he had read in my articles etc. and we chatted for a long time. .
But one thing that seriously impressed me was the look on his face when I asked him why he still used eggs. He answered my question by saying “Because I always did.”
