Clerical Hierarchy: A Roof on the Church

The majority rule under the headship of Jesus seems to be the way to go. In order for a man to rule, the whole church must agree with him. If they are not, one by one they will be asked to leave, to find a ministry where they are more “comfortable.” Therefore, those who continue to patronize the original church are only strengthening the rule of one man. It seems some would have to agree…

For the plurality to work … well, humanly speaking, it doesn’t. That’s the point. Leaders are forced to gather, listen to the Lord, listen to the trumpeting of the sheep, surrender their lives. As a group, they said to Jesus, this is your church. Lead us! Rule your people!

Then the ideas start to flow. The creative promptings of the Holy Spirit produced a program unique to that partnership. The question of who will do this and that every week will be resolved in these sessions before God. Annual plans are not a concern. Rules, regulations, constitutions, everything is kept to a minimum, while the people of God seek the face of God together and always.

It may appear that a group of men, perhaps a man, has a gift of teaching, and is asked to teach often. Good. But the gift of teaching is not the gift of leadership. Headship is not given to the Body! Let the brother teach, but let someone else with talent lead. And so on.

Our western problem seems to be money. When we pay someone to use their gift, we are doing a professional ministry. A great strain is placed on a brother who has all his earthly needs supplied by a partnership. If he doesn’t have every imaginable gift needed to “run” a church, he starts building it. Under the guilt of making himself busy and useful, he began to think that a true “pastor” should be able to do everything! And while he was running around doing everything, the Body was suffering. The “gifts” he uses can be used by other members of the Body who actually have those gifts! But no, this is all theory…”that’s what we pay the ‘pastor’ to do.”

It is forever easier to pay one person to do everything than to take seriously the gifts and calling of ALL members of the Body. But just think! Eliminate the need for all salaries for all American pastors, who can find good work and still use their gifts. Then take that money and send someone to a part of the world where Jesus has not been named!

Am I hallucinating? Or am I speaking good words, based on the Words of God Himself?

In the civilized progressive West we seem to have forgotten the lessons we learned in Rome. The differences in the clergy that we are taught will never be tolerated in God’s church. The anointing of the Head, Jesus, drips into His Body, every cell of it, even the lowest of us. That anointing must be declared. May no one oppose, or turn off, what God wants each one to do in Himself!

Some day we will have serious questions to answer about the way the “church” is conducted here. Where did we get all our awesomeness?

Where the promise of the “Bible College” that in four short years a candidate will become a “man of God”, ordained to the work of the ministry, ready to be placed among people far from his spiritual superiors, and called. their “pastor”?

Where is the “royal family” concept, where we call a pastor from other cities, essentially not knowing who he is, and promise to meet all his material needs?

Where is the tactic of corporate America to bypass faithful church members to fill all important positions with personal friends, also from other cities, who are also unknown to the people?

Where to wear the titles? Not that we all don’t have one. But what about Jesus being careful not to make a big deal out of it? Now Jesus knew that there were many fathers and teachers in the church, but they were told never to be talked about in this way. leading them to pride and arrogance.

Jesus is the Lord, Savior, Great Counselor, but I usually call Him, “Jesus.” Please, sir, don’t ask me to call you by a long title. I have titles too, you know. Son of the living God. Heir of salvation. Future assistant ruler of the world! But you can call me “Bob”.

I know, Paul called himself an apostle, but 1) he did not ask others to call him, 2) the historian Luke who wrote about him called him by his name, 3) Paul also called the himself a prisoner and a slave slave. So, I ask again, where is the need for titles?

Oh, people of the Lord, if we are not diligent, a clerical hierarchy is put in place that is actually a roof of the church. It is a roof that keeps the fullness of God from falling there! Now, the Scriptures speak of a foundation and walls to describe those who are called, but not a roof. Reason: God himself wants to be our covering.

What if we could go back to the original pattern? Sure, sure, your church is a “good” church, with a “good” pastor. He even worked with the “colleagues” of the leaders. But I ask, in the light of the Scriptures that I shared, what if we tried it in God’s way?

What if every “head pastor” in America stepped down, became one of the pastors, and really listened to the heartfelt cries of the people?

What if all leadership was raised from within, and money was not a factor, except for the most tried and trusted seniors?

What if the 20EUR’yearEUR’aged are not suddenly called senior pastors by men who love Jesus longer than they have lived?

What if leaders were made in prayer meetings, and not in college?

What if the holy living, as prescribed by Paul to Timothy and Titus is the only criterion for leadership?

What if the anointing was allowed to flow directly from Jesus to the entire Body, and not forced through some imaginary funnel roughly the size of a so-called “pastor”?

What if the gifts of ALL God’s people are counted equally in the Body?

What if there was no “roof” in the Church, and we were completely free from all the relics of the Babylonian priesthood?

Oh what a glorious church that is! Couldn’t God still operate in such a structure?

A call must go to all the people of God, to surrender their heavy burden, to discover the extreme simplicity of the Body of Christ. They need to be invited to come down from the throne, become people’s people, let Jesus show His leadership in a church that they think is their personal domain.

Then let the church be the church again! We will have our “psalm”, our “tongue”, our “teaching.” Let us out!

Shepherds, we will know who you are, not by your title or position, but because you are ahead of us, really ahead of us. If you love us, we can submit your corrections. If you are in charge, you can scare us. We may not follow all your dictates, nor meet all your needs. But show us the Father, feed us the Word, lead us to still waters. Die for us. We can get to know you. We will honor you. Because we honor the Head Pastor, Who lives in you.

Leadership, government, is one of the many issues we can discuss. Time has failed me to speak at length of other Protestant traditions that we praise as pious “ethics”: the strange combination of hating abortion while condoning contraception, when neither practice is supported by Scripture; the worship of Christian rock & roll artists, knowing that the term “rock and roll” has very immoral origins and the music itself has sent millions to hell; the excess of movies, dramas, and other entertainment for fat spiritual Christians whose ears itch; the almost complete acceptance of the Babylonian calendar of events (Easter, Hallowe’en, Christmas) and the traditional celebrations of such …

But enough with the negative aspects of Christendom. Is there something wrong with the organized structure we call “the church”? Yes, there is a thread running through this confusion that pleases God. This is the blood that is washed away, called poison.

Kaleo in Greek means “to call.” In the form ekklesia found in Scripture it means, “the called.” This is the word translated “church” in most passages dealing with the subject. Today the word “church” is so freely thrown around that it has lost its original meaning. But the true church knows who he is. He is a special group that is always called away from that which displeases God.

Our calling is not to “be someone” or to pursue a particular ministry or career. It is only for the relationship with the Father through Jesus the Son. This connection then places us in right fellowship with others who share the same calling. From those associations will flow the rest of our lives.

Are you part of the called? Where is the inner call of God calling you? Leave Babylon and follow that call. Yes, if you hear His Voice, do it now.
