The 4 Secret Skills To Career Advancement – And Finding Your Dream Job!

I remember very well, my first job. In the early days, I would go to work with everyone motivated. I have a very good attitude and am excited about work. Then it happened. I got caught in a rut. I no longer have that desire and fire like in the beginning. I didn’t feel like I was making progress and I didn’t feel like I was part of the team anymore.

At this point I realized I had a problem. I can’t move forward in my job or career unless I learn new skills. Fortunately, at the right time, a wise man caught me and taught me the 4 Secret Skills of career advancement and not losing my job.

I realized as I used these 4 Secrets that I not only progressed in my career, but also took me to my dreams. Without further ado, here are 4 Secrets, so you too can be successful in your career!

1. Right Attitude

The right attitude is one of the most important assets in your life. I can’t stress enough that a proper attitude is the #1 secret. You have to approach life with a “can do” attitude. You have to believe in yourself and you have to believe in being positive. This alone will separate you from the crowd.

If you’re one of those people who worries about who Brad Pitt is dating, or worries about someone else in another department, then you don’t have the right attitude. If you start a task with a negative attitude, or by thinking that you will not succeed, then you do not have the right attitude. If you do your work halfheartedly, then you don’t have the right attitude.

What is the right attitude? The right attitude is to focus on the job at hand, give it your full attention, trust yourself, and do your best. A positive attitude also includes honesty. It is being honest with yourself, your boss, your family, friends, or others.

That’s it! At work you should be part of the solution, not part of the problem, whether working alone or as part of a team. If you work hard, and give your best with a positive attitude, you just become the dream employee!

How do you get this attitude? Which leads to secret number #2.

2. Personal Development

You should be doing personal development. This is a key to your moving forward. One of the first questions I ask a prospective employee is: What books do you read? That alone will give an indication of what the person thinks is important.

I will ask you now. What books do you read? What Web sites do you visit? What seminars or workshops did you attend? Are you taking any continuing education? What is your personal plan for personal development, for personal development?

In order to maintain the proper consciousness in today’s world, we must always keep good things in our mind. Remember what the old computer said? “Garbage in, garbage out.” It is the same with our intellect and soul. You need to get some positive material to help you get through the negative times and negativity.

To really apply this secret, take yourself 30 minutes of personal development every day.

I suggest a tool that is free. Every morning, http://www.morningcoach.com provides 15 minutes of free coaching. This is a great way to start your daily personal development.

3 Listening Skills

Knowing how to listen is a critical secret. You need to learn how to really listen, not just “hear” what others are saying. Nothing will motivate you to improve more than taking a legitimate interest in what your boss and fellow employees have to say.

Listening is learning to keep quiet about what you want to say and be attentive to what the other person wants you to hear. How do you listen carefully? You prepare to listen by stopping what you are doing and focusing on the other person. Then you listen to their words, feelings, and needs as they talk to you. You can repeat a shortened version back to them to make sure you understand, giving them time for clarification, before you say what you want to say.

In conversation, many of us say something, and then don’t listen to the other person’s answer because we are preparing what we want to say next. I know, not you! Well, stop talking and start listening!

Like that wise man who told me, “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.”

4. Organizational Skills

The 4th, and final secret is organization! There are six basic things you need to organize:

1. Your contacts. Make sure you have a place to store all the valuable information about your contacts. This includes fellow employees, employers, friends, etc.

2. Your tools. We lost a lot of time looking for things like paper clips, scissors, and CDs. Manage your workspace to minimize the search for the necessary tools.

3. Your time. Use a planner to manage your personal projects and goals. Use the Plan, Do, Check, Do format.

4. Your daily action plan. Make a daily action plan, or use a daily to-do list or a checklist, to remember everything you need to do each day.

5. Your calendar. Use a calendar to stay on top of appointments and upcoming projects.

6. Your work journal. Keep a work journal, where you can keep your thoughts and be creative with ideas. It’s also great for taking notes in meetings.

The most important way to stay organized is to find the tools you use and stick with them. Don’t change just because a new toy comes out. Repair your system. It doesn’t have to be pretty – it has to work!

If you take these 4 Secrets and apply them, you will be ahead of 95% of today’s workforce. You will be invaluable to your employer and you will advance faster than you can imagine.

Is it easy? No! I never said it would happen. But you can do it! The key is to make steady progress every day and do it with the right attitude. You can make a difference in your own life and it can start today.

Get organized, be positive, improve your listening skills, and work on you. That’s the real secret to advancing your career!

Go do it!
