The Art of Conversation – Simple Ways Never To Be Lost For Words Again!
The art of conversation is easy, if you remember some simple guidelines.
If you do, you’ll never be at a loss for words again and can approach any social situation with confidence.
Everyone at one time or another finds themselves stuck in this kind of situation and for many it makes them nervous shy and uncomfortable:
You are facing a complete stranger and want more than anything to break the silence that makes you and the person you are with feel bad.
So how do you do it?
In these situations, you need some guaranteed ways to break the ice and start a conversation.
The first Rule of the art of conversation is simple:
1. Ask Open-Ended Questions
If you are selling something to a good salesperson, they want to keep the conversation going and they will never ask any questions where you can say no to their product or service.
For example, you won’t hear them say:
Do you want to buy this insurance policy?
You can say no of course and that makes the sale harder for them. They may say the question like:
What do you think about the policy?
Now of course they can say “no” but it’s not possible.
They say they like this or they like that or vice versa.
This allows the salesman to keep the conversation flowing and to get a closer.
They ask to open their prospect and while you are not in a sales situation your goal is the same.
So in a social setting how does it work?
Say your dinner and your food you don’t say “this chicken is delicious”
You can add something to the question to get an answer for example:
“This manoka is very tasty because Ivy’s meal was very good the other night, where do you like to eat?”
You force them to take your cue and if there is silence they will be glad you did, because they may be as nervous as you.
Silence between two people shows that there is no art of conversation, so they will be relieved if you try and talk to them first.
Let’s take another example.
You want to add a girl to her outfit. You don’t say “I like your dress” You probably get a polite “thank you”
“Try I like your dress where are you from?”
It forces more than a quick closed answer.
Once you have an answer to any boutique. You have several options to open the conversation:
“Where is it?” “My wife sells there” etc. “I really like classic styles have you seen such and such on TV” etc.
Your goal is to get the dialogue flowing.
Some tips to keep in mind are:
2. Relax
A relaxed person is a friendly person and it puts people at ease easily. Be polite, don’t fight and smile, everyone will respond to a friendly person.
You are easy and that makes them feel comfortable.
3. Taking Cues From Where You Are
If you really stick talk where you are.
The decoration can be interesting so say:
Really like the decor what do you think of the color scheme?
Don’t just say you like it ask them what they think and give them an answer
4. Use topical topics
Again if you are stuck for an opener think of something in the news that is topical and ask them for their opinion.
Do not use controversial topics that may offend, there are many topical topics to discuss that they may know something about and engage them.
The key is to engage your interlocutor and ask them to talk to you, once done the conversation usually flows.
Remember that if there is silence they may feel as bad as you and be glad that you have the art of conversation.
