MLM CHECKLIST – Internet Vs Network Marketing
“It’s the Flashy Thing That Catches the Eye.”
Is that what they mean by Attraction Marketing?
I have spoken to many people who have called me asking about the coaching program I am participating in. Most do not know what it takes to make money online so they are wise to seek help.
So far so good. The trouble comes with their preconceived notions — some call them dreams — of how easy it is to create wealth.
One of the first questions I asked was if they knew the difference between Internet Marketing and Network Marketing.
Unfortunately, most do not. So in a nutshell this is it:
Internet Marketing is usually a job with no residual income. Network Marketing is a business chosen because of the possibility of residual or royalty income.
Now of course there are many more of these, and we will cover some of them here, but that is a good place to leave when exploring a home based business opportunity.
A while ago I read a book on how to improve thinking skills. (Yes, it’s a skill so it can be sharpened.) The author, Edward DeBono, offers this: “Perspective is the most important part of thinking. how we construct the world.”
If our perception is limited it doesn’t matter how perfect our logic is. Flawless logic with a limited perspective still gives the wrong answer or the wrong conclusion.
One of the basic cognitive tools introduced by DeBono is PMI, an acronym for Plus, Minus and Interesting. The beauty of this tool is how easy it is to work while providing a broad point of view that is not designed to back up an opinion that has already been formed. That particular practice is what DeBono calls the “intelligence trap”, spending all your intellectual capital supporting an existing position or opinion instead of thinking it through and coming up with the best possible one.
PMI is an “attention-directing tool” where the thinker deliberately focuses attention first on the Plus points of the problem, then the Minus points and finally the Interesting points. This is done deliberately and with discipline, taking all of 2-3 minutes.
Let’s apply PMI to the question of Internet or Network Marketing. The lists here will not cover every part of any of them.
First the Plus Points of Internet Marketing.
One can:
• make “a lot” of money
• work from home in PJs or sweats
• be “anonymous” behind a computer monitor
Now the Minus Points:
• has a learning curve (HUGE if starting with limited or no computer skills)
• the time investment is the same size
• investing money – websites, ad tracking, autoresponders, advertising, leads, outsourcing, etc. – can be disruptive
• basically you have a job because as an affiliate you have no ownership, relying on the success of others and their continuity to stay in business
• you will need many, many affiliate programs to make any kind of reasonable income and the time to manage them all
Finally the Interesting Points:
• you will learn a lot about technology
• you will learn a lot about human nature
• you can attract a lot of help from Internet Gurus who are looking for the starry-eyed newbie and offer programs to accelerate your success
If you have the time and don’t need to make money NOW to pay some bills, AND if you love Learning, Internet Marketing can be attractive. The systems and techniques and gadgets available are challenging and very unique.
Now let’s look at Network Marketing.
Additional Points:
• a person can make “a lot” of money with the prospect of passive or royalty income
• one can work from home in PJs or sweats
• have a real business with a retailable product or service
• the cash investment is small
The Minus Points:
• has a learning curve (skill sets required for success)
• have an investment of time
• you really need to talk to people who always tell you “No thanks”
Now the Interesting Points:
• you will learn a lot about human nature
• you can attract a lot of help from Internet Gurus who are looking for the starry-eyed newbie and offer programs to accelerate your success
• you can meet and make friends with many, many people online and in person
Again these PMI lists are not meant to be exhaustive but to open up your thinking about the differences between these two types of Marketing.
One last thing. Network Marketers, the good ones, selectively use a few pieces of what Internet Marketing is to generate their own leads. As a friend likes to say, “Most of what Internet marketers do can be beneficial to us but we usually keep failed and failed Internet marketers when they finally have had enough.”
