Exit Statement or Leaving Story?
An exit statement or leaving story can help protect you from the emotions of a difficult job loss. Even if you left your previous job on your own accord and it was your own decision, you need to make sure you explain what happened.
If there is a redundancy or reduction in your work, the danger of reminding it through an interview question is that emotions may come out inappropriately leaving you thinking about the whys and wherefores rather than the question at hand.
What you need is an “Exit” statement that allows you to state positively why you left (or left) your last job.
This leaving story or exit statement should be expressed in such a way that it:
- Not emotional;
- Based on reality;
- It is and should be presented positively;
- Not criticizing anyone;
- There is nothing negative about the previous work, and
- Lasts approximately 30 seconds. You should maintain eye contact throughout.
This exit statement or leave story can also be tagged with your “career overview” statement to preempt the difficult question altogether. A Career Overview is your answer to a ‘Tell me about yourself’ type of question.

You can answer this question with confidence if you have prepared an exit statement that presents the facts in a positive light and leaves you in control.
Your exit statement will look like this:
“After a difficult year for the business, the directors decided to reduce the number of staff in the manufacturing division. Many people including me were affected, but I understand the reasons for the decision and do not regret my time working there. I learned a lot and I have good colleagues. I also know that I have developed good skills so I am happy to be here to discuss this job with you today.”
See how you can make a clear statement that satisfies the interviewer but also leaves them with a positive expectation.
Try a similar statement that fits your situation and don’t worry if it doesn’t sound right. The interviewer is less concerned about this than finding out if you can do the job!
