Learning Difficulties Faced by Students Today
Mr. Marc Prensky once wrote a famous article titled “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants I & II”. He stated that today’s students are no longer the people our education system was designed to teach. These students have spent their entire lives surrounded by computers, digital music players, video cameras, smart phones, and other devices of the digital age. Our students today are all therefore “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet.
Digital native students work in a multitasking environment where they do homework, eat, watch television and text at the same time. On the other hand, digital immigrants ‘speak in different accents’ where they print an e-mail to read or a document to edit instead of just editing it on the computer.
This difference leads to our first difficulty that students face today – students and teachers speak different ‘languages’. Most students prefer to know the answer immediately when solving math problems rather than waiting weeks and even months for the instructor to correct and record the results, return them to the students and explain the correct answers using the answer key. Days of waiting for results can discourage a student. There was a university professor who wrote three times to the principal of a junior high school to request that the math teacher return the exam paper to his daughter to review at home but was repeatedly denied. Today’s students expect an educational program that offers immediate solutions to questions, a personalized learning map, digital follow-up capabilities and assessments to determine the strengths and weaknesses that will prepare them to manage the learning process better and be more effective while having fun.
The second difficulty facing students today is the knowledge and qualifications of teachers. An article titled “Prof says teachers need better math” was published in Maclean’s magazine in September 2011. The article talks about two university mathematics professors who spent two hours trying to understand the decimal division method taught in the local high school teachers to teach their own children. who was in grade 7. They failed, the article recalled. Today’s students deserve a better quality education to be well equipped to cope with the tougher competitive environment of the future.
The third difficulty is the revised program from the Quebec Ministry of Education for high schools. The reform requires students to learn more advanced subjects in junior high compared to senior high. For example, a few years ago, none of the high schools taught the logarithmic function. Any major science student will know that the logarithm function and exponent function are like twins. One cannot learn the exponent function without learning or knowing about the logarithm function. This partial education has frustrated many responsible mathematics teachers. Nowadays, mathematics teachers teach these two topics even in secondary three. In addition, the problem-solving questions in a few lines have been replaced by two to five pages of situational problems.
There was a high school principal in Montreal who told one of our advanced math students that no high school teacher could teach him. The student is then encouraged to form a math club for other constructivists to learn on their own or get help from other tutoring centers.
These three external factors as well as personal motivation to learn, family background, and internal factors contribute to the learning difficulties students face today. Many assessment tools are available out there such as the happiness or depression index to see if one is happy or sad. Regarding math, I will create a math-fearing index to diagnose a person’s fear level for math so we can find a solution to deal with it. As the saying goes, “finding the cause of a problem is the middle way to the solution.”
Therefore, to be a good learner, a student needs a quality education system that includes quality instructors, complete and interactive curricula, and an environment that promotes self-motivation to learn. -on while having fun. This combined aspect is what I call the ICE learning method.
