A Guide to Scheduling A Newborn Photography Shoot at Your Home
For a 33 year old with no kids, I sure know a lot about kids! How, you ask? Baby photography! I have been a child photographer for over 13 years. They are my specialty, my joy, and my life.
When I started newborn photography I had to learn how to hold a baby, comfort a baby, stay calm, and familiarize myself with facial expressions. I always look at them and think, “I wonder why they’re smiling like that”. And then you heard a sound… from the diaper… a wet sound. I think parents, other photographers, and everyone who works with children can relate to this.
After several years of newborn photography, I decided to create a guide to help new parents and photographers to help prepare for the photo shoot when the photo shoot takes place at the clients’ home. All of my newborn photo shoots are taken at my clients’ homes because it’s the most comfortable place for a growing family.
Without further ado, here’s a guide born from my frequently asked questions about a newborn photo shoot…
1. When should we schedule the newborn photo shoot? Schedule your newborn photo shoot within the first two weeks of the due date. This is only a tentative date and may change depending on the baby’s arrival. If you have a C-section then the date is pretty much fixed unless the baby comes early.
It is best to capture babies around 5-14 days while they are sleeping and have a newborn look. That said, there are no guarantees with newborns. They do what they want. I did photo shoots for 6 days. Some will cooperate and some will not. I did photo shoots in 4 weeks. Some will cooperate and some will not. Either way, they’re all pretty cool!
2. What happens if my child is late? Contact your photographer and play the date by ear. If the child is early, don’t worry about contacting your photographer right away. Enjoy the new member of your family! Contact them within the next two days and let them know your baby is here.
3. What is the temperature in the house? The day of the photo shoot I suggest to have the house in a good warm temperature. We sweat but the baby is comfortable. You probably don’t need the heat during the summer though. Small children do not like to be too hot or too cold.
Remember that most of the poses are of the baby in their diaper, naked, or whatever you mentioned to your photographer. Walk around your house and think about the settings/backdrops that will work best in terms of lighting. Generally, photographers like to setup the room with the most natural light. But also important rooms like the nursery, your bedroom, the living room, and the yard when it’s a nice day.
4. When should I feed my baby? Try and time it so that you are almost done feeding or completely done by the time the photographer arrives. A happy baby equals a sleepy baby. Sleeping babies are wonderful! Also, remember that we can feed the baby outside of their schedule to keep them calm.
If you want your baby in a wrap, diaper cover, or possibly naked then I suggest taking their clothes off (but keeping them in their diaper!), cover them with a blanket, then start feeding them . If we don’t move them after they have a full stomach, it’s better.
5. What should I do if my child is asleep before the photo shoot? Sometimes your child sleeps before we arrive and before feeding. Try to keep them going by changing them or maybe a nice bath. You want your child to be tired during the photo shoot, not before
6. How long will the photo shoot take? The amount of time will depend on the photographer and the child. I have completed newborn photo shoots in under an hour and upwards of 4 hours. If the child wakes up during the photo shoot, it’s OK! Photos of your baby alert and awake are amazing!
7. What props should I prepare and will the photographer bring? Most of the props and hats that I personally use in my photo shoots belong to the child. The picture has a different meaning if you use your own hat, blanket, book, and/or other props. Also, don’t forget all the gifts your baby will receive. Using gifts from friends and family makes these photos extra special.
I hope this overview has helped answer some of your questions. Good luck and have a great photo shot!
