Writing Test Questions Well – Part 1 of 3
Often an organization wants to prove the effectiveness of its training by administering some kind of test at the end of the training. Unfortunately, most trainers are not skilled at writing test questions. This is more than just writing 20 questions about the content. You can distort test results (and therefore get inaccurate feedback about training effectiveness) if your test questions are not designed correctly.
In this first of three articles on designing appropriate test questions, we’ll discuss multiple choice questions and how best to design them.
Usually, if someone is not good at writing multiple choice questions, the correct answer is always the longest – try to know this and keep your answers to the same length.
It is easier to give 3 alternatives than 4. Don’t make it difficult for yourself. Your answers should include one correct answer and one incorrect but plausible one.
One of the ways to make sure you have believable, but not incorrect, answers is to make sure each of your choices is logically consistent.
Check all the answers in the top colors:
TRUE
red
BLUE
white
orange
false

BLUE
white
Ponies
Your believable but incorrect answers don’t have to be too difficult – remember you’re testing people with new knowledge and limited skills / experience – don’t make answers that hold you back, make answers that are stumped the unskilled person. By the same token, the correct answer should not jump off the list.
If your answer starts with a vowel, the main question must end with “a(n)”; if it ends in the – which is grammatically correct – the question itself will automatically prompt the trainee to choose an answer that begins with a vowel.
Example: Example: An Interstate is also known as a:
Expressway
Highway
route
Have you seen / heard how the question ends with the forcing you to choose the Expressway?
All selections must begin with the same phrase or sentence structure.
For example:
TRUE
The crossing time is:
A. When the light turns green
B. After you look both ways
C. If the road is clear
false
The best time for fishing is:
A. Morning
B. Japan
C. April to May; after the ice pack melts
Beware of All of the Above. If you give “all of the above” (or “none of the above”) as one of your choices, you must include it in all of choices. If you have 15 multiple choice questions and only 1 or 2 have the option “none of the above,” this is a clear signal that the correct answer is none of the above.
These guidelines for creating well-written multiple-choice test questions should help ensure that you can accurately measure your trainee’s level of learning.
