Educational Technology – What Does a Classroom Look Like Today?
It’s an exciting time for education and technology. Educational technology is constantly evolving and becoming more common place in the classroom. Google “21st Century Classroom Presentations.” You will find transfer schools in different types of environments. Is it good? Are there problems with increasing interactivity and engaging classroom materials?
These questions cannot be answered in this article. This article will focus on educational technology. The technology is constantly on display at conferences for teachers and administrators. This article is intended to educate you on what technology is currently available for schools. We will also continue with the 21st Century Classroom theme.
Document cameras, projectors and computers have become commonplace in the classroom. Document cameras are an amazing piece of technology used in education today. The ability to display a page in a text book or a worksheet on the board without creating a transparency! Many schools still use transparencies and overhead projectors. Overhead projectors limit the freedom to adapt the class and create real-time learning experiences based on student responses.
Projectors and interactive whiteboards have been necessary since the Internet became available. Multimedia, simulations, videos, maps, research, etc… Projectors allow the whole class to learn and participate in discussions that come from a specific topic or skill. Interactive whiteboard technology allows the teacher to stay at the front of the classroom watching and controlling the mouse.
Another important part of educational technology is computers. Computer labs are now commonplace in schools. The real concern is the actual “computer access” students have throughout the week. Getting enough computers and making a consistent schedule for the whole school is always a challenge. The answer to this challenge is mobile laptop carts. Imagine a large cart with 25 laptops lined up, plugged into outlets inside the cart. Only the cart needs an external outlet to power all the laptops. This cart is moved from classroom to classroom and students are assigned computer numbers. Instead of scheduling computer time in the computer lab, teachers reserve these laptop carts…bringing the computer lab to them!
Classroom Response Systems or Voting Response Systems or clickers have become common trends as an additional part of their educational technology plan. You are sure to find more information if you Google “21st Century Classroom Presentation”. These tools allow for real interactivity and engagement within the classroom as a whole.
The final piece of any educational technology plan is the software. Blogs, wikis, games, curriculum software, reading and math intervention software, etc. are all things students do on computers. Once the hardware is in place, the question is, “What are the students doing with the computers?” Educational software is a broad term, schools often research software specific to a target group of students: high school credit recovery, home students, before/after programs school, supplementing school curriculum content, state test preparation software, and more.
One thing is for sure, educational technology is constantly evolving and classrooms are getting closer and closer to the 21st Century Classroom.
