Living a Long Healthy Life is No Accident

I lived more years then I thought but thankfully they were all healthy years. Now it didn’t happen because I had ‘good genes’ (I didn’t) or because I got lucky and beat the odds (no such luck), it didn’t happen because I wanted to be healthy so I worked towards at that end.

Now you may be asking; who doesn’t want to be healthy? Well my friend all you have to do is sit in the mall for 30 minutes on any given Saturday and observe the people walking by and you will get your answer. Apparently very little! Obesity is rampant along with all its associated diseases, emergency hospital visits are on the rise and people with the disease are flocking to the pharmacy in record numbers to stock up on prescription drugs. y can do to improve their health.

We as a willing society have been deluded by the complacency of health. What I mean by that is that individually and collectively we have a herd mentality that believes that the additions to TV and the nightly news and the hoards of so-called experts tell us what is good and what is not. good for our health. We have abandoned our good common sense and God has given healing to the human body. Instead, we dutifully take our shots, vaccinations, prescription drugs and bad advice just because we’re told to. Few of us take the time and effort to educate ourselves about health issues.

Our health is the single most important issue that every human being faces and yet we act like it’s fashionable to be fat and out of shape. We wear our fitness with a badge of honor. It’s amazing what everyone will tell you when asked ‘I want to be healthy’. So with that assumption let me explain a common sense approach to maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout your life.

First and foremost you have to start thinking about yourself. Ask the authorities who ask you, not disrespectfully but with curiosity. Get the answers you need to make your own health decisions.

Decisions should be made based on your health not what others are doing.

Unless you are serious about being healthy for the rest of your life and are willing to do what it takes to succeed you most certainly won’t. When I say healthy I mean free of illness and debilitating conditions not the common cold (even if you don’t have much) or the occasional bug that goes around. Although I must say if your immune system is where it should be even the common flu will have a really hard time infecting you. If you are sick for a short period of time with NO after it affects.

Some of the things I am going to list here that you will hate and stop reading immediately, at least I have thought of you yourself. For the rest of you please remember that I am not a doctor or medical expert just someone who has lived a relatively long life and who has walked the walk and talked the talk. Some things seem simplistic, they are not.

1. Personal strength with a fierce attitude that I am worth the effort to succeed.

2. Never give up on age, treat your body at 50 as you would at 30 and it will respond if given the right conditions. (side note): I climb trees, run sprints, jump high places all the things I did as a kid, I never stop so the body responds.

3. Demand the best for your body don’t settle for anything less. Don’t put anything on or on your body that you wouldn’t want your children to do.

4. The food police will tell you what or what not to eat but I will tell you this, if you eat any food in moderation with lots of variety you will be better for it. I specifically eat my share of meat, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and lots of dessert. Everything is in moderation that all meat is not fried but cooked in another way and all vegetables and fruits are pesticide and chemical free. Eat moderate portions at each meal and discipline yourself not to overeat. Remember that we eat to sustain our bodies ability to function properly and for most of us we don’t need a lot of food. I think eating has become one big event where we have to eat as much as we can at each sitting. Enjoy your food but remember that you eat because it is a necessity.

5. Drink clean water without chemical additives and drink a lot of water.

6. Avoid eating a lot of sugar and use salt in moderation.

7. Packaged food contains preservatives and dyes that are not natural for the human body.

8. Wash (scrub) fruits and vegetables before eating unless they are organic they are full of chemicals.

9. Frying food is a no no because of cancer causing carcinogens.

10. The general principle I live by about what I put in my body is simple,

If it contains man-made ingredients like preservatives or dyes or any long scientific names that are impossible to pronounce then I’m sure I don’t want to eat it.

11. Exercising is good but don’t overdo it moderation applies here. I find that walking cross country is fun and good exercise for the whole body. Also walking my two golden retriever pups keeps me jumping up and down. The key here is to stay active EVERY DAY remember this is a lifestyle.

If you’re able to do outdoor physical work like mowing the lawn that’s a real plus, enjoy the great outdoors and reap the health benefits at the same time.

12. Love life and laugh always. Surround yourself with loving family and friends.

13. Stress kills so it is very important to avoid stressful situations. I firmly believe that stress is the number one health concern in our society. Stress puts a huge burden on our immune system to protect us from disease and with a weak immune system the door is left open for all kinds of health problems.

14. Supplement with all natural supplements.

15. Lastly or perhaps first, stand firm in your personal beliefs.

Now what I’m saying is everything related to staying healthy throughout your life but it’s an empty life if I’m not married to my soul and fully committed to our marriage. When you can share your life with the person you love the burdens of life melt away and happiness is easily found.
