Gaslighting: How to Recognize

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation. It seeks to sow the seeds of doubt in the targeted individual. The goal of the gaslighter is to ask the victim about his own perspective, memory and explanation.

Befriending you and gathering information from friends and relatives are ways the abuser can gain insight into how to psychologically harm you. If you have even a small psyche issue, it is greatly exaggerated and talked about a lot.

Domination or destruction is the basis of gaslighting. Often early childhood issues are played out in the unbalanced mind of the aggressor. Anger and jealousy are often the cause of the situation.

This is not a one-time or temporary situation. This often continues until a crisis illuminates the situation. Hiding is a hallmark of this form of mental and emotional abuse. Isolation and emotional manipulation are also common tactics.

My sister has ruined my life, my role in our family and my spirit for decades. I’m not surprised that his abuse escalated past vicious gossip and back and forth. As he gained recruits to his cause by discounting me, his sense of power increased. He must flex that power as often and as completely as he can.

I avoided meeting anyone in his world. There is no telling how many versions of the falsehoods have been repeated. His efforts to convince everyone that I was delusional and that my mother had full blown dementia were constant.

There is a term called ‘double doc’ing.’ If two doctors consider that a person has dementia, a third party (my older sister) can order care. The plan was to put my mother in a nursing facility against her will and she would be done. His life restricted the use of the family land.

He lives in fear and I join him. When I arrived and barricaded his residence at the Lexington Place care facility, I became the target. Immediately, my mental state and the way I behaved were questioned.

We were both scared at the end. When Mom passed, I became an open target. The police were at my door with an eviction notice for days in his memory. A judge gave me and 10 elderly rescue animals five days to vacate.

Friends came in or the dogs and I had no choice but to plan a long camping trip at the lake. I was literally shaking with fear. Gabapentin suppresses alcohol cravings but it is harmful. After giving Mom’s eulogy, I began to emotionally shut down.

After the judge spoke, I just wandered outside the court. They called me about court costs but I barely had enough gas to get home. I arrived at our little trailer in the middle of the Piney Woods and was devastated. I have to grieve my mother.

Soon, more police. I walked away with my new Texas license. I shook hands with the two officers and apologized. I told them that my sister Cindy used them to harass me. Clearly, they expected to find me in a changed state. I told the paramedics who joined them that I was ready to take any test. It’s not necessary.

My sister is not done yet. His anger flowed through his soul. It has gotten worse and worse over the years since it started in high school age. Shaking up my mental health and emotional stability is the goal. Constantly reminding others of my weakness—perceived or real—keeps the destructive energy alive.

No victim should remain on paper. I was shocked to defend my mental state many times but no one noticed a serious defect. Depression/anxiety issues are chronic. A 10 mg. Lexapro is now 8 meds per day since I live near family.

Gaslighting is serious abuse. It does more damage than meets the eye. When a person’s core is attacked, survival instincts kick in. I no longer feel safe in the room with my brother alone. He always suggested that I become violent. He would stab himself and throw the knife away and say I did it. That’s how advanced my case is.

“Stop sharing what’s happening on ‘social media’ or you’ll get hurt,” he growled. Her husband shouted, “And he will do it too.” I told him that I did not know that our people physically threatened each other. My advanced degenerative disc disease quickly reminds me of how vulnerable I am to injury.

My condition is very far away. I couldn’t leave my mother’s side and couldn’t bear to bear it. Seeing my mother disappear after burying my younger sister caused a complete breakdown. I had to be hospitalized. It is necessary.

I saw how someone could take my sensitive heart and caring nature and use it to try to break me. He knew I would stay and take care of Mom but he wanted credit for his caring son. When I showed up and found that he was living in the dirt, I almost called adult services.

Cleaning the whole place was necessary but with my sister’s constant attacks, it was never peaceful for any length of time. We did what we could and extended his life by a few years by rescuing abused animals. That part of this journey made us both stronger.

Now, I know it was announced through my family elders that I was delusional and ‘addicted to pills.’ There is not an ounce of truth but Dad, my loving aunt and some nieces and nephews are concerned. My soul was angry knowing that I was the cause of the anxiety. My brother enjoyed the drama.

My feeling is that without divine intervention or a complete meltdown, my gaslighter will find the anger and strength to continue trying to diminish my value to the world forever. It is a dark disease. Many did not recover. However, I chose not to be a victim anymore.
