A Guide to Decluttering Your Home

2. Ask yourself these two basic questions for each item (or group of items of the same type) in your decluttering area. The first question is the following: “Is this thing really useful for me?” Does this thing serve any important purpose? Do you use this item on a weekly, monthly or even yearly basis? If not, there is a good chance that the answer to this question is “no”. If the answer to this first question is “yes”, then you can keep the item if you want. The next question you should ask yourself if the answer to the first question is “no” is: “Does this item have any sentimental value?” This question is sometimes difficult to answer. In my post about sentimental items, I said you shouldn’t keep more than 6 or 7 sentimental items. Obviously, that rule is not set in stone. I just know that number is good for me. You can keep 10 or 15 sentimental items. It’s really up to you. I think sentimental things are important, but you also have to realize that if you keep too much, you’ll find yourself living in the past. So, even if the answer to this second question is “yes”, it is better to get rid of the item, especially if you have some sentimental items that you want to keep. In general, if the answer to both questions is “no”, then you should remove the item. If the answer to the first question is “yes”, then you can keep the item. If the answer to the first question is “no”, then proceed to the second. If the answer to the second question is “yes”, make sure you are within the sentimental things you set for yourself. Sometimes, you have to choose between two sentimental items so you don’t find yourself keeping too many of them. If the answer to the second question is “no”, then you can get the item.

3. Arrange it. Place the items you want to keep in their designated places if they are out of place. If they don’t have a designated place, find one for them. Don’t just reorganize for the sake of reorganizing. If a particular item has been in one place for a long time, even if it is a strange place to put it, you might as well leave it there. It’s really up to you. If you’re a bit forgetful, noting things and where you moved them isn’t a bad idea either. However, since you’re decluttering, your top priority is getting things out of your home. You can put things you no longer want in boxes and give them to a charitable organization that accepts donations or you can sell them on sites like Craigslist, Kijiji or eBay. Also, store your trash and your recycle bin. I’m sure you’ll find some trash or some recyclable material as you declutter. There may also be some things you’re still on the fence about. I would suggest putting it in a box labeled “not sure”, “probably stuff” or whatever else you want to label it. You put the box somewhere and leave it there for three months. Again, if you forget, putting a reminder on your chosen device or in an agenda is very helpful, like this you won’t leave the box there for two or three years.
