Book Critique of Alexander Hislop’s: THE TWO BABYLONS

In THE TWO BABYLONS bibliography, Alexander Hislop uses a vast and varied skill. Most of the references in the bibliography are foreign to this writer, but their pneumatologic and mythological themes are familiar; one finds similar references and conclusions in Theodor H. Gaster’s, Myth, Legend, and Custom in the Old Testament. Hislop wrote in the early 20th Century, but his philosophical meanderings reflect many of the convictions that traditional language maintains.

On the first page, Author Hislop puts forward a serious misinterpretation in an attempt to establish the identity of Babylon. He likens the Revelation 17:5 symbol “… MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,…” to the Pope’s throne and expands on the idea of covering Revelation 14:8.

But in this critical exegesis of the author, “BABYLON THE GREAT, Mother of Harlots” cannot be Rome or the Papacy (although the Papacy is every bit as deceitful and degenerate as the Assyrian prototype). The accusatory Revelation Babylon is a symbolic substitute for Jerusalem–for the Jerusalem constituency (or perhaps Temple authority) is equally accused of the historic but idolatrous Chaldean Babylon. The biblical reference (Rev. 17:5) refers to a woman in verse:6: a woman, “… drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus…” How even in an imagination the Pope to wage war against the first followers of the first century, when the Pope had not been invented! However, the woman did not sit on the Seven Hills (mountain) but instead sat on the Seven Ages. These are inherited features that correspond to the evils that are pointed out as a reflection of Babylon. Immediately, with only a few passages of verse, the Ages (mountains) are described as the Seven Heads of the Beast (Rev. 17:10).

Hislop draws most of his deductions from mythological extensions too numerous to recount, but the main contributors are Saturn (Str), and a mixture of Chaldean, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian figures. myth–as well as drawing biblical characters such as Cush, Nimrod, and other nominations. From this, he makes a story that is very easy to see and somehow leads to the impressions of the prophecy of the Bible. Hislop believes that there is a connection between mythological nominalism and the principals of the Bible; yet he subscribes to an omnipotent deity and joins the ranks of modernist futurism.

How does that happen? Of course, the Hebrew God has no form or image; Imagination is forbidden in a fixed order; therefore, if there is any credibility in the Hebrew concept Jehovah, we cannot expect the metaphysical idea to receive contributions from foreign images. While idolatrous imagery was adopted from time to time, its departure from orthodoxy was called adultery or idolatry; that is: if the Hebrews violated their male-female relationship with God-Tribal Nations (strangely, the Sadduccean question in Matthew 22:25 describes this relationship.) The interpretation for the Seven Dead brothers and A dead wife wrongly appointed for 2000 years .

Hislop denounced December 25 as inappropriate for the Messiah’s birthday! Ben Winter suggests: If Herod died in 4 BC, after ordering the killing of children who had reached a certain standard, and at that time, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fled to Egypt, this interpreters do not see a problem with December 25 (5 BC) as the date of Jesus’ birth. The polemic that defines December as an inappropriate time to graze sheep, in the field, is as absurd as any other to refute the time frame suggested by tradition. Sheep and other livestock had to be grazed in a less sophisticated society, during the mild season. How else can they earn a living? Buying hay at the Feed Store? December 25 may not be correct, but Hislop and other exegetes have not proved the point.

On page 111, Hislop describes the fruit that Eve ate as morally bad and bad. This idea is far from the only evidence that can testify to the truth of the event. By ‘participating in the prohibition,’ Eve was filled with understanding and was able to distinguish between good and evil. Wrong again Mister Hislop! Eve did not eat immoral fruits; no fruit, just a dispositional choice.

Petitio principii, Hislop nominates the relevant principals in the Chapter VII introduction; but he failed to obtain an identity for the Great Red Dragon (Rev. 12) and went so far as to reconcile the biblical enigma with mythological parallels, even inexplicable biblical characters, and finally assign the Dragon as the poor innocent Father (innocent only in this. for example). The Great Red Dragon is a complete symbol of Babylon, Egypt, the Beast, the Behemoth, the Harlot, Israel, and the epitome of tribal heritage as interpreted by Horns, Heads, Crowns, mountains, spirits, chariots, carpenters, winds , horse, and miscellaneous. other tasks are replaced by the symbolism of the Ten Ages.

The sea, suggested as a literal sea, page 242, is a sea of people (Rev. 13:1). The Beast appears as a substitute representation of rebellious humans, and the Earth produces a similar appearance in Revelation 13:11.

Pages 263-265, Section IV, concerned with the Image of the Beast. The antique, mythological, and hierophantic references lead Hislop down the same old path of Catholicism, again to the Madonna (Mary). Furthermore, Hislop likens the “beast wounded by the sword, and alive” to Semel, and thus through a painful route to the Virgin Mary. How imaginative! And untruth! According to Ben Winter’s exegesis, this particular Beast Imagery represents Israel as the Fifth Hebrew Age, the Divided Kingdom Age; that successive Kingdoms were wounded almost to death (Jer.30:14; Rev. 13:3, et al).

Page 287 continues with THE TWO BABYLONIANS as ‘Beast name’; and in his own time, Hislop suggested that the time was ripe (1916) for ‘the last days.’ Well, he didn’t miss it for about 1800 years.
Page 287 describes Popery as “Satan’s masterpiece.” So far, we have found little truth in Hislop’s words. Page 287 shows a slight difference.

Ben Winter suggests: Satan is a ‘conditional attitude’ exhibited by many Hebrews, a hostile attitude or affliction. That’s it! With/without extenuating animation with body entry and egress capabilities. It is only an attitude and must arise in the intelligence of the offending parties, as narcissistic appreciation and destructive adoption.

We can see 10,000 errors in Mister Hislop’s exposition; but such is useless, and we do not mean to underestimate his earnest efforts. But, again, we must condemn the misleading source of apologetics in his Appendix. Even without historical exegesis, we refute the conception in which the grandson of Noah is said to have emerged as Menes, the King of Egypt (page 294).

This critical author praises Alexander Hislop for an incredibly rich background in Mythology. However, he would not recommend the book for help in interpreting the Bible or as a contribution to soteriological teaching, although one may derive some pleasure from the practice of reading.
