What You Must Do When God Seems Distant

People find it easy to worship God when things are good in life, when God provides food, friends, family, health and a happy state. But when things are not good, how do you worship God?

There was a man named Job in the Bible who lived in the land of Uz. This man is blameless and righteous, he fears God and shuns evil, he has seven sons and three daughters and he owns seven thousand sheep, three hundred camels, five hundred two pairs of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and he also had many servants. . He is the most famous man among the people of the east. But one day Job lost everything he had including his seven sons and three daughters. When the news of the disaster reached Job, he got up from his cloak and shaved his hair. Then he fell on the ground in WORSHIP and said “I am naked from my mother’s womb and naked I will walk. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away may the name of the Lord be praised”. Can you imagine Job’s pain? At one stage of his life’s battles, his wife rebelled against him and his friends left him (Job 19:13-19). In chapter 1 of the book of Job, he lost his children and all his wealth, in chapter 2, he lost his health, and in chapter 3, he cursed the day he was born, in chapters 4 – 41, he experienced a period. of loneliness, confusion, false accusations, questions without tangible answers and delays.

This was a period in Job’s life when God seemed distant, silent and out of action. In all this, Job refused to curse God, he still trusted that the day would come when God would show him mercy. Thank God Job’s story did not end with his continuous trials, but a new chapter of his life was opened next. Job 42:10 says, “And the Lord restored the captivity of Job … the Lord also blessed Job and gave Job double what he had before”.

Friendship is often tested by separation and silence. In your friendship with God, you will not always feel close to Him. Any relationship includes a time of closeness and a time of distance, and in a relationship with God, no matter how close, things move from one side to the other when the worship can be difficult. In order for your friendship to mature, God will test it in times that seem like separation – times when it seems like He has left you or forsaken you. St. John of the cross called these days of spiritual dryness, doubt and alienation from God “the winter of the heart”.

Besides Jesus, David is probably God’s closest friend. David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22) but David always complained about God’s apparent absence. Lord, why are you standing far away and far away? Why did you hide when I needed you so much (Psalm 10:1); why did you leave me? Why do you remain so far away, why do you not heed my cry for help (Psalm 22:1). Why did you leave me? Of course, God never left David, and He never left you. He promised again and again, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8). But God did not promise that, “You will always feel my presence”. In fact, God admits in Isaiah 45:15, that sometimes He hides His face from us. There are times when God seems to be missing in action in your life, you wake up one morning and pray but nothing happens. You rebuke the devil, but nothing changes. You go through spiritual exercises, you have pastors to pray for you, you confess every sin you think of, despite asking for forgiveness from those you hurt, you fast, still nothing. You start to wonder what happened to me and how long it took.

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with you. This is a normal part of testing and maturing your relationship with God. It is painful and confusing, but it is very important for developing your faith. Knowing this gave Job hope when he could not feel God’s presence in his life.

If God seems distant, you may feel that He is angry with you or disciplining you for some sin. In fact, sin separates us from close fellowship with God. We extinguish our fellowship with God through disobedience, conflict in the business of others, friendship with the world, and other sins.

But often this feeling of leaving or moving away from God has nothing to do with sin. It is a test of faith – one that we must face. If you are newly converted (a baby Christian), God gives you many confirming emotions and often answers the most immature, self-centered prayers to let you know that He exists. But as you grow in faith, He will rid you of these trusts. The situation that will extend your faith the most is those times when life is broken and God seems nowhere to be found. This happened to Job. In one day, he lost everything – his family, business, health and everything he owned. Most discouraging of the thirty-seven chapters is God saying nothing.

If you are Job, how can you praise God, especially when He seems far from your life, or when you don’t understand what happened to you and God is silent? How do you stay connected in a crisis without communication? How do you keep your eyes on Jesus when they are filled with tears? The good news is, Jesus is concerned about your situation. There is always light at the end of every tunnel; I’m sorry to arrive. You will meet GOD at the right time.

Friend, this promise is for those who are in Christ Jesus. If you haven’t given your life to Jesus Christ, you can do it by doing something important. Recognize and accept that you are a sinner; repent of your sins; and confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Pray this prayer: Lord JESUS, I know that I am a sinner, I cannot help myself, I surrender my life to You as I turn away from my sin and confess it with my mouth and trust in my heart that Jesus is the Lord. Come into my life and be my LORD and Personal Savior, in the name of Jesus – amen.
