20 Ways to LOSE Points in Your Promotional Oral Interview

As a panel member, who has sat on many oral boards and worked with hundreds of officers to improve their interview performance, I found that there is a distinct similarity that the individual or collective can get points from they got performance. Check the following list and let it serve as “what not to do” during your oral interview. Your goal is to score as high as possible, but what’s the point if you take two steps forward and then make common mistakes that force you two steps back , or worse … three steps behind? Half the battle after gaining points in an interview is knowing how not to lose them. Try hard!

1. Lack of energy, interest, or personality; is physically robotic.

2. The interest in promotion is for the wrong reason (just money, change everything, show others how to do things right, etc.)

3. Offers criticism of the current command staff of the organization or competition.

4. Maintains unusual or inappropriate facial expressions (rolling eyes, opening mouth, not making eye contact, gritting teeth, etc.)

5. Gives a lame, weak, wet fishy handshake; a palm drenched in sweat; a bone-crushing vice-grip handshake; or a half-handshake.

6. Shows uncertainty; inability to make decisions or commitments; or can’t handle the paper being tested.

7. Gives a one-sentence or one-word answer (topical, cosmetic, in-depth).

8. There is no prepared opening statement or closing statement that simply consists of, “Thank you for your time.”

9. Have an expressionless stone face that never smiles or giggles for no apparent reason throughout the interview.

10. Avoiding the question or providing information that does not answer or is irrelevant to the question.

11. Overly aggressive, arrogant with a self-important attitude.

12. Inability to communicate clearly: Monotone; bad diction; bad pronunciation; the volume is too high or too low; the verbal pace is too fast or too slow.

13. Lack of confidence, calmness, or stability; physically and verbally overly nervous.

14. Does not show interest in work-related activities, volunteering, committees, professional associations, training, schooling, clubs, or projects.

15. Exaggerates the power and authority of the position being tested.

16. Makes excuses, argues, or doesn’t take responsibility, about bad issues.

17. Lack of flexibility; inability to adapt to a changing scenario.

18. Lack of politeness, humility, and respect: bad manners.

19. Demonstrates an inability to acquire or understand the role of the position sought.

20. There is an inability to comment decisively on behavior, leadership, or community issues.
