How To Develop Great Presentation Skills – 7 Strategies for Tackling Questions You Don’t Know Part 2

In Part 1 of this article, I outlined the importance of handling the questions that hold us back. Let’s recap the first three strategies we discussed:

o Return it – Repeat the question and return it to your audience;

or “Let me check and get back to You” – Write the question and make sure you get back to the asker on the promised date and time;

4. “That’s a Good Question”

Appreciate the questioner. It is only effective if the praise is sincere. Sometimes we tend to believe that we have seen and heard everything on a particular subject. But someone from somewhere always has a question that we haven’t thought of yet. If that happens just say “That’s a good question. I’ve never thought of it that way. Does anyone here have any ideas on that?” (You turn the question back to the audience). The key here is that you must be sincere. It always works when it’s sincere because the audience loves to be complimented. If no one in the audience comes forward with an answer, just use the “Let me check and get back to you” technique.

5. “Are There Any Experts Here?”

What do you do when a question falls outside your area of ​​expertise? You may be a marketing expert but the question asked deals with the technical aspects of a product. This is a question that requires the input of such an engineer. If you know there’s an engineer in the room you can say, “Peter, an engineer. Can we tap your experience for this question?” If there are no engineers in the room, tell the questioner that you will speak to an engineer and get back to them (technique 2).

6. Offer Similar Responses

If you don’t know the exact answer to a question, offer up what you do know to show some credibility. Then use the “I’ll get back to you” technique. Avoid droning on and on about your parallel knowledge or you will be accused of beating around the bush! This will damage your credibility.
