The Dream Giver, a Feather, and a Vision Review

These next few paragraphs explain a new book I read titled “The Dream Giver”. I shared a bit about the book and then some interesting facts I learned about myself after being a part of this journey to Family Land.

Have you ever received a book that someone recommended to you and you weren’t sure if you wanted to read it, but you agreed to do so?

I always read romance mystery books and some of my favorite authors are Mary Higgins Clark, Miranda James, Dorothy Howell, and Dorothy Gilman. These books connect the natural born detective in me. No, I don’t work as a detective for a living though; I always notice the differences in things and when something isn’t right or when something isn’t right. I find detective work fascinating. Maybe, I just like to get away from reality and other people’s drama. I don’t really know what draws me to these kinds of books. I knew if I had to pick one I wouldn’t put it down. I kept reading and reading as the hands of the clock kept moving. It’s so crazy.

Recently, my library has grown with the addition of something other than a mystery. I’m not sure if I like it or if it holds my interest. Boy I was wrong. This book I am talking about is so powerful yet simple that it is easy to connect with. The story is captivating at the same time. The characters in the book don’t have names which makes this a book unlike any other I’ve read.

The book recommended to me for review is titled “The Dream Giver” by Bruce Wilkinson. I had never heard of it before I was introduced to it and I even wrote down the name and author so I would remember to look it up in the library. My local library doesn’t have it so I put up a handle for it. This should tell you how eager I am to read it. No. I figured that when it wasn’t available right away it wasn’t meant for me to read. It never occurred to me that it might be so popular that I was on the waiting list to get it. Perception is everything and I was wrong. I admit it.

You’re not reading this to hear all the drama surrounding getting the book in the first place, but something about the book. I was hooked before reading the book. I opened the cover, inside next to the chapters was a short note that read: The book is for anyone who hopes they can achieve something in their life. Have you ever opened a book and seen a dedication to someone? I have it too. Now, have you opened a book and the dedication is for you? In all my years of reading books I have never seen this. I am impressed and want to read more.

The Dream Giver engages with the reader. The beginning asks the reader, a question to me. I felt like I was actually talking to someone right in front of me. The question is “Do you believe that every person on earth is born with a dream for his life?” I was like, what? I always read books for fun and to find out who is the killer? Remember I read Mystery books. It was too much, this book asked me and I found myself speaking out loud answering it. Omg.

I follow the journey of Ordinary, a Nobody, who lives in a place called Pamilyar. OK, he has a name; not a name like you and i have but still it is a name. Ordinary does the same thing day in and day out, just like everyone else who does Nothing. He wakes up, goes to his usual work, comes home, and starts the day again. He has thoughts of something bigger and feels that something is missing in his life. The thought passes and he continues to do what is expected of him. One day he found a feather in his chair. He thought it was from the Dream Giver. He wasn’t the first Nobody to happen to him. No, there were others before him; he never expected this to happen to him. He was afraid to tell anyone in the Family about this dream of his and that he had found this feather that the Dream Giver had given him. Everyday, Ordinary keeps thinking about his big dream, it’s all he can think about. He became restless at work and realized that he would never be happy if he couldn’t pursue his dream. He was given a chance to make a difference in the Dream Giver and he wanted to follow through.

I kept reading because now I’m interested in what this big dream is in Ordinary. I was still in mystery mode and this piqued my curiosity. I read on and found myself feeling the same way the Ordinary felt. When he’s sad, I’m sad, when he’s scared and unsure I’m scared and unsure. This has never happened to me before while reading. wow

Ordinary tells her dad about the fur and how she’s not sure what to do. His father told him that the Dream Giver also visited him; he was too afraid to stray away from the Familiar in search of his Big Dream. He tells her to do it. Ordinary, with the assurance of his father, left his comfort zone, the Family Land. As he got further away from the Familiar he questioned himself more and more and became afraid. He wonders if he can do it or if the dream is too big for him. Along the way he finds friends and family who let their fears for him get in the way of his forward thinking and he doubts himself even more. Every time he looked at the feather for reassurance and remembered what his dad had told him.

The reason this book resonated with me is that I found myself in Ordinary’s shoes, if he ever existed. I am pursuing a vision that I believe I have all along. I am still looking for it at the age of 40. There were times while reading this book that I thought I had lost my sight but as I read more about the Ordinary I realized that until I stopped beating my heart. that vision is there and it can still be brought to life.

Many people will be obstacles between you and your vision. Some may be family or friends. It’s not that they don’t believe in you, it’s that they don’t want to lose what you have with them. They are not ready to follow their dream therefore; your big dreams are more than they can handle. Maybe they don’t like to see you fall either. Don’t they know that if you follow that big dream, nothing and I mean nothing big or small can stop you from it? YOU are the only obstacle.

Ordinary finally reaches his Big Dream with the help of the Dream Giver. He found that believing in his dream and the Dream Giver kept him focused and kept his vision in his head. The word NO does not exist when we are truly driven. NO is replaced with “find another way”, and you do it. The ordinary uses the truth and his wisdom to think of everything that stands in his way. He thought many times about what he should do for more than a day, finally he decided to continue following what the Dream Giver gave him, a DREAM.
