Asking Hypnotic Trance-Inducing Questions

The purpose of asking hypnotic, trance-inducing questions is to put the person in a position to access useful and meaningful information. It just so happens that such questions are hypnotic, although any kind of hypnotic trance is not the purpose of asking such provocative questions. Asking can put a person in a hypnotic-like trance state. You can tell they are in a trance because their eyes will be moving around as they access the information needed to answer the question. When they access that information, they are in a trance state. A trance state is usually very focused, even if relaxed. Even as you read these words, you are in a vision because you are likely (and hopefully) unaware of your surroundings. You are focused on interpreting and translating these symbols called letters and words into meanings. When a person accesses internal information they are often unaware of their external environment. A good question will require a person to focus their attention on their internal landscape to get the information. During this time, they may be mild, or in some cases extreme, unaware of their external environment and possibly in a hypnotic-like trance state.

For example, the question “where do you want to go to dinner tonight” is not very provocative and does not require any kind of depth to access the information. The question “How would you describe your first dinner date” takes some thinking; while actually remembering and gathering that information, a person can be focused in a hypnotic trance-like state.

Asking any question should lead one’s mind in a particular direction; thus, any question is a suggestion, in the hypnotic use of that term. Hypnotic suggestions are simply words that automatically create images. For example, if I ask “can you imagine yourself sitting on the back of a white winged horse flying in the sky” you have to entertain that image in your mind to understand it. That question focuses your mind on a particular image. I can ask the question “do you think it might rain today?” on a perfectly clear day but still the listener’s mind is taken to the image of a rainy day. That’s how the proposal works. It takes the mind in a particular direction. Similarly, the mind does not visualize negatives so the statement “don’t forget to lock the door” only creates images of forgetting to lock the door. A better suggested statement is “remember to lock the doors.”

This information can be practical when dealing with others because it is a way to direct their attention to a subject of your interest. For example, let’s say you’re dealing with an employee who’s done the wrong job. Instead of focusing on the mistake, you can ask “what would it look like if you did it right?” That question requires the person to access a mental picture of something that actually did not happen, but could – and should – happen. The question brings to mind a mental image of the correct action which is a better reinforcement that changes the error. If a teen is oppositional, a parent might ask “Let me ask you this, what needs to happen for you to be more cooperative?” This question requires the adolescent to access images of cooperative behavior to communicate to the parent what is required for that behavior to occur. This is better than “stop arguing” because, again, the mind cannot imagine negativity. The word “stop” cannot be described but “being in opposition” certainly can.

There are two general formats for asking these kinds of piercing, thought-provoking questions. Both formats rely heavily on a single, simple word “if.” I like to refer to “if” as “Icreativity Fascination” because the use of “if” requires the mind to imagine something– and hopefully be very drawn to that imagination, which is a trance state. The first question begins with “what if” and the second question begins with “what prevents (behavior or action) from happening. The second question does not use “if” directly, but the need to be drawn into an imagination is still necessary. When someone says they can’t do something (or won’t do something), a good question to ask is “what’s stopping you from doing that?” Or, you can ask “what happens if you do this?” Both questions require a high level of internal focus to answer, which is often why this is such a difficult question to answer. More often than not the answer is “I don’t know”. In such cases you can say “guess.” Whatever comes from that guess comes from their internal engines and useful information.

These two formats: “what happens if…….” and “what prevents….” are hypnotic trance inducing questions and may take a person several minutes to answer adequately. way. You can tell if they are processing information by observing their eyes. Our eyes tend to move left, down right or across left or right…when we are accessing internal experience. A person’s eyes can actually reveal a whole thinking strategy just by answering one question. For example, if you ask someone who wants to quit smoking “what is keeping you from quitting” you may observe their eyes go up to the right then down to the left, then to the left then to the right and then to right center and then up. right….There is a lot of movement as the person accesses the internal mental state needed to answer that question.

Eye movements tend to be associated with different sensory channels. On the far right are probably visual constructions, ie, imaginations. Above the left are likely to be remembered visual experiences, ie, memories. The bottom right is common feelings and the bottom left is common internal dialogue. Centered and upper right is mainly constructed (imagined) auditory and centered on the right is mainly remembered auditory. The straight to the center is usually seen or remembered. Some calibration is often required to determine what any particular human eye movements represent. You can ask a simple question like “do you remember what you had for lunch last week” and you will find out what the eye movements represent that is remembered. Then you can ask “what are you going to do next Friday night” and you can look at eye movements for constructed or imagined experience.

When you ask someone these kinds of suggestive questions, you are leading them on; you are a leader. Take time to observe people’s eyes as they think about answers to questions; then practice asking these hypnotic trance-inducing questions. You will find these effective tools for gathering meaningful information and directing a person’s attention to the rich content of their mind.
