English Language Learning Tips!
Many people ask the question – How long does it take to learn a language? The answer to that is – How much time do you have? Obviously, the more time you study the faster you will learn. It is also important to speak the language as best you can even if you make mistakes. The more you try, the faster you will start speaking. Here are some English language learning tips that will help you learn English:
Tips for Learning the English Language 1
The FIRST thing you need to do is listen and learn the PRONUNCIATION of the language. My advice to you is to get it from day one! Spend time on Spending time on it now and the rest of your studies for the rest of your learning period will benefit greatly! Some languages are phonetic, some are not. Phonetic means that the sounds and letters of words always match. There are international phonetic symbols that teach you how to pronounce all sounds in all languages of the world. The English language is not a phonetic language. It is NECESSARY to first learn the phonetic symbols associated with the sounds of English words. It is possible to learn English without knowing these phonetic symbols but your learning time will be longer and most of the time your pronunciation will be inaccurate as you rely on memorizing the sounds in words most part of your learning, as you had to do when you were young. I strongly recommend learning phonetic symbols for English learners before you start your first grammar or reading book! If you learn the CORRECT pronunciation in the beginning, it will save you a lot of valuable learning time later. It is more difficult to remove the wrong learning and have to relearn the word correctly. I have an excellent workbook (including an audio CD) that I recommend to you to help you learn these phonetic symbols. It is called “Phonetics for Learners of English Pronunciation” If you have just started studying English but need help with pronunciation this book will help you!
English Language Learning Tips 2
It is better to study for at least 20 minutes every day than to study for an hour every week. Each of us has a limited attention span (concentration time). This is the amount of time you can focus on before you start thinking about something (what to do for dinner, who are you meeting later, etc.). Research shows that most people need to learn a small amount and then have time for revision before adding new information. As an example, say your attention span is 20 minutes. If you study for an hour (60 minutes) only 20 minutes of that time is the actual learning time for you, the other 40 minutes are not as effective. You better stop after 20 minutes, rest and continue when you are refreshed and ready to absorb new information. This is why it is better to divide your study time into smaller regular time slots. FIRST and BEYOND
IMPORTANT – REVISE what you have learned before learning new information!
Divide each of your study hours into: 1 – study time 2 – revision time
Every time you revise you cement the information in your brain and make it easier to remember when you need it.
Tips for Learning the English Language 3
The ways to learn any language are:
1 Listening
2 Speaking
3 Reading
4 Writing
This is how you learn your own language when you are young!. You’ve learned one language one language – you can LEARN another! As a child you first listen, then copy speaking sounds, then you learn how to read and write. Some language experts say that you don’t fully learn your own native language until around the ages of 12 -15 years old! As an adult you have the advantage of being able to read and write so your learning another language should be faster!
Tips for Learning the English Language 4
Listen: Cassette tapes and CDs that accompany workbooks. Reading a book. Cinema songs by native speakers on radio and television (news and documentary programs have better pronunciation without slang like some regular programs)
Tips for Learning the English Language 5
Read it! Read it! Read it! This is probably the easiest way to study because you can do it at your own pace, in your own time and at your own level. Reading sources: Course Books (these may be the first type of books you read) Magazines (good for short stories, advertisements etc.) Grade Reading Books (these books specially written for each learning level) Newspapers (may be difficult at first – but persevere! ) Leaflets Brochures Timetables Menus
English Language Learning Tips 6
Writing: Writing is a powerful way to learn a language. All my language students who write an essay every week to give me correction, learn English faster than students who never write, and some don’t even have class notes! Every time you look up a word in the dictionary you should write this word in a small pocket notebook, small enough to put in your pocket or handbag with your pocket dictionary, so that you can use it at all times and in all places ( eg. standing waiting for the bus!).
English Language Learning Tips 7
Speaking: Now you’re ready to put everything down and SPEAK! Try to do it as quickly as possible and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If this is a bad mistake a native speaker will soon tell you. Be careful! native speakers don’t always tell you your mistakes! Native speakers do not always know the grammar of their own language. (Are you?). So may not explain your mistakes but just give you the correct answer. It is best to study at a recognized language college. If you are studying with a private teacher, ask to see him. His qualifications. Just because a person is a native speaker of a language does not make him or her. He is a qualified teacher! He. He must have some kind of teaching certificate AND an EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching qualification. Ways you can practice speaking: Talk to a professionally qualified native speaker whenever possible.
This is the first best resource you have because you will learn the right way from the beginning. Other students in your class (DO NOT be tempted to speak your own native language during class! ) with native speakers you know, or advertise for exchange lessons! Travel to the country of the native language so you can practice with native speakers. If possible, go study and or work in the native language country. Obviously the longer you can stay, the better. In six months you should be at least intermediate level and in one year you should aim for fluency, that is, if you stay and interact with native speakers for the entire duration of your stay. Do NOT be tempted to stay with people of your own nationality. You may also be studying at home and your progress is much slower!
