The Basics Of Giving An Effective Public Speech
How many times have you heard someone give a great presentation in front of a group, and thought you wish you could speak like the presenter? Or that the speaker has “natural abilities?” Have you ever attended presentations when you felt the speaker was terrible, boring, uninspiring or boring? What are the factors that make a public speech good?
(1) The first “must” of a good speech is preparation. The speaker must clearly know his topic, but must also know the group he is presenting to. The best presentations include a combination of humor, entertainment, participation, visual aids (without overconfidence), and useful content.
(2) A speaker must involve the group from the start. One of the biggest mistakes many speakers make is telling the audience to “sit back, relax and enjoy the presentation.” When the audience sits back and enjoys, they usually don’t participate. A presenter should engage and challenge his audience.
(3) Effective presenters do not read their speeches. While it’s great to have notes, PowerPoint slides, and even some key ideas, there’s no surer way to “lose” an audience than to read them.
(4) Practice is essential. While a presentation should not appear stoic, stilted, or memorized, if the talks are disorganized, or someone is out of place, the point is often lost.
(5) Have an agenda or program and follow it. Inform the audience at the beginning of the topics you plan to cover, and encourage them to take notes, and to participate. Any good program has enough time to answer questions, or clear up confusion.
(6) Don’t overestimate or underestimate your audience. A good way to avoid that is to say something like, “As you know.” Always make your points clear.
(7) Don’t believe that saying something once is enough. Many statistics show that there is something known as the “3 to 7 Rule,” which means that in a presentation you need to state something at least three times (preferably in different ways to continue this is interesting), and if the presentation is part of a series and the next parts are given in a short time, then you need to repeat the same points (at least in total 7 times). Statistics also show that if the next episode of the series is more than 10 days after the first, the total number of repetitions should be increased.
(8) Involve the audience. Do role playing, proactive exercises, and a speaker must be willing and able to “face an audience.”
(9) There must be a beginning, a middle and an end. It is best to take short breaks after sixty to ninety minutes, because most people learn and remember, and it is better to pay attention in shorter intervals.
(10) Never allow a particular member of the audience to dominate the program. Often, some audience members speak to be heard, rather than for learning purposes. A presenter must be able to maintain control at all times.
These ten steps are just the basics of becoming a skilled presenter and public speaker. It takes confidence, practice and preparation. Speakers should always have as their ultimate goal that each attendee leaves his meeting feeling that he spent his time in a valuable and useful way.
