How to Answer ‘Have You Ever Lied?’ On a Personality Test
You’re in the market for a job, you NEED a job, and it looks like they want to hire you. Congratulations.
Then they say, “But first, we need you to go to this website and take an on-line timing test. Don’t worry, it’s an easy test, there are no right or wrong answers.” You sighed in relief. But you don’t have to. They just lied to you.
Personality Tests are designed to determine whether you are a suitable applicant for the job. If you passed the interview and they said the rest of the set was the personality test, then you might be a good candidate for the job. Therefore, they are lying when they say, “There are no right or wrong answers.”
Most tests are 100 questions, or based on 100 points. Each correct answer will give you one point. Every wrong answer gives you zero points. The more points, the better your score. Are you still with me?
You go to a question that says, “Have you ever lied on a personality test?”
What exactly are they asking? “Are you a liar?” No, you’re not a liar, but you want the job, right? What are you doing? Did you answer honestly, and get the answer wrong? Do you compromise your standards and get the answer right?
The problem with personality tests is that they are designed to compromise your standards while still determining whether you are willing to compromise your standards. This is a standard Catch-22 situation.
The point of taking a personality test is that you WANT and NEED a job. Do you behave dishonestly and lack integrity at work? I hope not! If you want to keep that job that you compromised your standards to get, you can prove how high your standards are by living up to them every day.
- If you say you LOVE working with people, then prove it.
- If you say you work well without much supervision, then do that.
- If the test asks if you can forgive people for making a small mistake, then don’t go into the job without confidence.
The way I see it, you need to know HOW to take the personality test so you can get the job. You may need to be less than honest in order to give your prospective employer the best possible employee.
I know, it’s messy, but it’s standard hiring practice. Learn how to take the test and you’ll be in good shape once you’re hired.
