The Infrastructure For Conversations About Teaching And Learning

One of the major challenges in supporting scholarship in teaching on campus or in the disciplines, is to encourage not only individuals who are interested in continuing that work, but to help develop the field itself. We aim to explore the ways in which the scholarship of teaching can be situated within the wider discourse and practice of teaching and learning. The hope, of course, is that as teaching scholarship develops, it will become attractive to a greater number of teachers, and that the enterprise will ultimately raise the level of reflection about teaching and learning for all. academics – teachers, administrators, and students. We cannot forget the role of students in shaping the culture of teaching and learning on campus. Their expectations about what the appropriate course is can be a powerful conservative force.

Teaching cultures will involve collaborative field work on a few select campuses, and will require a focus on perhaps no more than four disciplines or fields. However, it will be informed by what we hear from many individuals, campuses, and disciplines or professional fields in the larger program. And it informs what we have learned today about the forums where the exchange of information and ideas about teaching and learning in higher education today takes place. Perhaps compared to traditional research it is, but the field of teaching and learning in higher education is much more active (if not evenly distributed) than many think.

When you start filling in the cells with examples of forums for teaching and learning discussion, the first thing you may notice is that they are not only or even primarily campus-based. It’s definitely for the better. After all, one needs national or regional meetings for sharing new work and meeting people, and as we can see there is a relatively rich variety of types of forums that serves the purpose of a national level: there is a relatively respectable number of journals , newsletters, funders, associations, programs, awards, and workshops. Many are available for teachers or projects without regard to disciplinary affiliations and there is a separate set of such forums available for many particular disciplinary groups. It is even possible to find some of these national forums also for specific groups of disciplines.

In part because these forums are national (and even international) in scope, they are easily identifiable. In fact, many of these forums are advertised on their sponsor’s website or have their own website. We have only just begun our research, but we have already found over a hundred entries for each of the national/general and national/disciplinary cells. Understandably, it is more difficult for an outsider to learn about forums aimed at specific clusters of campuses – grouped, for example, by state or region, or by institutional type. And, of course, you really need to be on campus or talk to people there to learn about campus-wide forums designed just for their teachers. Needless to say, the hardest depth to get from the outside is the conversations and forums specific to the individual departments themselves.

Most of the examples we found in the national forums were for groups or groups of disciplines from the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology, in part because science education enjoyed such widespread support. . However, it is the case that sometimes our scientific colleagues share their wealth. Certainly the largest set of forums will be those with a national scope but a disciplinary focus. These forums are also easy to find on association websites, or if you talk to colleagues involved in the teaching and learning communities that have formed in almost every discipline. Many of our examples are from recent applications because most of those interested in applying are already involved in various programs, commissions, conferences, awards, journals, and sections of the Association that keep these groups alive. . But two warnings: these worlds can be marginalized within the discipline and they can be divided among themselves. There is a whole different field of educators who contribute to refereed journals for case studies and case research in professional management education and business management.

Another thing that should be said here is that it is misleading to put all this activity in one cell because there is not much communication sometimes between these teaching and learning groups in the discipline. Forums for groups or clusters of campuses aimed at faculty across disciplines are often organized through collaborations with member campuses. For teachers from clusters of campuses in a field there are sessions of meetings sponsored by regional sections of national disciplinary associations. One can also mention the forums organized by state branches of national organizations. We have not yet found examples of forums organized for teachers from clusters of campuses, of clusters of disciplines, but surely we will.

At the campus level, a lot is going on – especially for teachers from across the field of study. Teaching and Learning Centers promote a variety of activities across campus and nearly every campus offers teaching awards. We found many forums for colleagues from groups of disciplines organized at the school or college level. In fact, one activity that can be valuable for campuses starting campus conversations is to find out where such discussions are taking place.

That is the outline I want to share with you today. Of course, this only speaks a little about structure and does not touch on the content of these forums, quality, or “centrality” to the larger enterprise of the department, college or university, or discipline. I also haven’t talked about some interesting questions related to the flow between forums. In this regard, journals, conferences, workshops, and listservs are certainly important on campuses; and certainly teaching and learning centers contribute to the flow within a campus itself. And we can’t forget the travelers, We also can’t forget the many faculty developers and regular teachers who travel to workshops and sessions on campuses and to meetings around the country.

Many questions arise. How does this infrastructure for conversations about teaching and learning compare to others in scholarly life? Is it as rich, as diverse, as serious? Do its participants treat the business with equal gravitas? Can one characterize these groups of scholars formed around teaching and learning as discourse communities? What should we do to foster broader participation in these conversations, or to foster new discourse communities among a broader range of college and university educators?

Clearly, building discourse communities around scholarship in teaching and learning is a task with many challenges but also much to be done. As our survey of forums has shown, there are now many places where teachers meet to discuss teaching and learning – generally, in their own and related fields, and in their own and other institutions. . Many of these discussions may already be within the scope of what we call the scholarship of teaching and learning, others may be open to “infusion” through ideas such as inquiry, a literature, documentation, or review. in the company. Some are closed. Some teachers will be interested to know how much good work is going on. Others will be dismissive – finding that the conversation lacks the necessary level of intellectual energy and exchange. The idea of scholarship in teaching and learning aims to develop these conversations, expand their scope, and make them attractive to teachers with the highest expectations.
