Mapping The Gender Gaps for African Women in Technology

Sustainable Development Goal 5, Target 5.6 (b) is very clear; to promote the use of enabling technology in particular Information Communication Technology to promote women empowerment. From this I get the power to talk about the possibility of achieving Goal 5 target 5.6(b) by 2030, 14 years from now. But I wonder if this target can be met in the situation at hand? Regardless, I’ll let you be the judge.

Technology is changing the world faster, although it is masculine and challenging, but it is worth noting. One thing that cannot be disputed is that ICT seems to be the snail of change in the world of women, because businesses related to women are back in the seat of the ICT drive. While fewer women and girls continue to miss out on the ICT value chain and more men continue to enter the ICT world, the balance is clear. It is clear to the extent that, how many women are taught how to make computer applications, how many are computer literate, how many repair hand phones and computers, what are we doing to attract women in digital career? It is superstition to believe that ICT can promote promiscuous women and is just an empty excuse. Superstition is a big gap and still a joke, although it is a strong influencing factor that keeps African men in captivity for a long time regardless of background. Undoubtedly, information technology communication vis a viz the internet changed lives and is still changing lives, it changes how we do things, what we do, when and where things are made. It makes the world more modern than time. Closing borders and open borders, makes the world a smaller space for everyone. The only thing I see that the internet has not done yet is bridging the gender gaps. Gender inclusion in technology would be the sensible thing to do if we want a better and safer world for everyone.

Gender inequality remains an obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Goal 5 in particular. It is unfair to know that Men still have difficulty understanding the undertone of SDG Goal 5 – I. e Gender Equality, and then restrict it to technology. Think, what does gender equality really mean to men? As they once asked- “Do women want their own men to be equal? Or what does the United Nations mean – gender equality? That question needs an answer and I know you can. But you see that it is very difficult to explain it in the context of Africa to men. It is very difficult to explain the meaning of “gender equality” to African men and is the root cause of resistance. If I ask, why is it so difficult for women advocates to convey exactly what kind of equality they mean- when advocating equality? Does this equality mean aligning oneself with men? What are the qualities of these virtue? What about the benefits now and in the future, and even children and families? I think if some of these are answered, the thoughts and views can be to be formed. You know, a lot of men pretend they know what gender and equality are, when they don’t. They just went back inside their circle and framed it as an affront. Did you know that there are many misconceptions about gender equality in the local community? As far as the global world view? Do a little survey and you will be surprised by your results.

Educated men are least of all the worst of it, while uneducated men don’t even want to hear about it. Women are considered weak without needing a voice. In religion, one gender is the tail and the male, the head. The African perspective broadens the scope and relegates women to the home. I know that women and girls are less tech savvy than men. I ask why? Why are men always trained for developing opportunities and given priority to access the same and virgin periods? Why are women left to learn about emerging opportunities later and given the last chance to access the same? Then I realized why the world is bad. Think if the internet educates a girl, doesn’t it educate the world as they say?

Preparing women and girls with technology skills will help, especially now that every job has a digital component. Whether selling fruit, restaurant business etc., knowledge of internet/technology will help. But the real problem in Africa is, most women and girls especially in poor rural areas do not have access to the internet, those who can access the internet access it at a very high cost; the internet is slow and the connection is broken. Internet coverage is still more urbanized; many still do not know how to use the internet with business sense or skill. And I was disturbed. Confused about what to do?

The UNESCO 2013 report shows that 65 million children around the world do not have access to education. 29 million girls are illiterate in Africa, while 17 million girls are out of school in Africa. It seems illogical if some men feel threatened if women have access to education? For example, how traumatic we postulate that educated women are not married and make them feel dissatisfied with the social setup. I know that even marriage is not the end but a means of social separation. However, all these narratives sometimes make our women weak and less interested in being who they are.

According to the World Economic Forum 2016 Gender Gap Report, that we will not have gender equality in the workplace for another 118 years, makes me agree with the report and see how to contribute to turning the wheel. While the empowerment of women and girls continues to be resisted by the majority of men, it makes me feel that the women-led advocacy has not really helped matters, rather than creating gender strife. And from what I see, men’s resistance to gender equality can be seen in the bullying, attacks, bombings, kidnappings and killings of gender activists. It is a humble opinion that, women leading advocacy should be explored. Gender advocacy should bring men into their group work and open dialogue with men at local to international levels. I will recommend that UN Women should be led by men and see if we don’t have new results.

From Kampala to Madagascar girls and young women are doing their best to make an impact in the international space. In Dakar, for example Awa Caba is building e-commerce sites; where local fruits are sold to citizens while improving their well-being. In Nigeria, Linda Ikeji of http://www.lindaikejisblog.com uses writing skills to write news stories on her blog and ranks as a high earner daily among others. Therefore, women who are the best entrepreneurs around the world should be trained on how to use the internet to expand their social network, business, make new friends and contacts. And when it’s over, good will steal from us all.
