To Every College President, Faculty Member, Administrator and Staff Member

Are you neglecting your students? Do not answer immediately. Maybe you have. Most of the colleges lack a place that caters to the students and their parents. So you need to do the following information.

The one thing that most students worry about is graduating from college with a good job. They want to get off on the right foot and launch their careers in a well-paying job with a respected employer. Their parents want that too. Parents want to know that their financial sacrifices have paid off. They also want to know that everyone at the college or university is doing everything in their power to make that happen. Unfortunately, few colleges are able to harness the energy of their entire college community and focus it on that goal. Neither will your college.

You might say that finding a good job is the student’s responsibility. Or, you might believe it’s the responsibility of the understaffed and underfunded Career Services Office. In fact, you say “It’s not my job.” But, if you think that it is not your responsibility either, you are wrong. In fact, you are so wrong that you may be one of the college leaders and faculty members who discourage your students. Being a college leader, faculty member or administrator should mean that you care about your students so much that you are willing to do everything in your power to help them succeed, in every possible way.

To show your concern, you can ask what else you can do to help your students. I’m glad you asked. Here are some suggestions:

Change the Campus Culture – To increase the number of seniors who graduate with more jobs, your entire college community (College Leaders, Students, Administrators, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Parents) must all come together to ensure that the each student knows where he is going, develops a step-by-step plan to get there, gets campus, work and community experience and receives the training and guidance needed to prepare and conduct an effective to find a job. To do that, you need to change the culture of your campus.

Create A Network For Your Students – Every faculty member, campus employee, student, parent and alumna already has a network that can be expanded, if they try. Those networks have the potential to uncover critical contacts and job search information to ensure that every college senior can increase the number of job interview opportunities they receive. To do that, you need to use and capitalize on networks.

Identify Job Opportunities – Professors, instructors, administrators, parents and alumni cannot reach their positions without going to school or working with other people in their field. Those contacts are necessary to help students identify job opportunities. Just imagine! If every faculty member, administrator, campus employee, alumnus and parent identifies a job opportunity for your students, almost every student will find a job. To do that, you need to bring your campus community with a clear focus on student job search success.

Teach Students How to Prepare – You may not realize that “The job search in senior year actually starts in freshman year.” But, it’s true! That’s because a successful job search requires a lot of preparation time. Believe me, there is a lot to do. It is what your students do in the first three years of college that will determine the level of job search success they achieve. Student preparation activities and achievements accumulate every semester, every year. They can’t all be done in senior year. To help your students do all that, you need to change the way you think and act.

Help Students Create Their Own Plans – Most students cannot make a practical plan on their own. They’re just not good at seeing into the future. That’s where you come in. You can help students identify their goals, find out what employers expect from them, make a list of achievements, improve their leadership, communication and people skills, learn on how to conduct an effective job search, develop the necessary job search tools and techniques, draft resumes and sales letters, sharpen their interviewing skills and much more. To do all of that, your students need someone to teach, teach and guide them through the process of developing their plans. “Students can only succeed at the level they are prepared for.” Will you help them?

Everyone Must Participate – To succeed in changing the culture of your college and the degree to which you help your students prepare for their senior year job search, you and every member of the campus community must be involved. Are you ready and willing to change the way you operate?

College leaders like to say that their job is to provide students with a good education. However, exceptional college leaders understand that their students need more than that. The best leaders do whatever it takes to mobilize and inspire their entire college community, to help make their students’ dreams come true (land is a good job). They know that large, looming college loan obligations without immediate job prospects can greatly diminish any sense of pride in receiving a good education.

Great teachers, administrators and staff members also do a lot. Through their words and actions, they make it clear to everyone that they are part of the solution. Their active participation in student planning activities, student mentoring and guidance, student participation, network building, summer, part-time and full-time job recognition, and training or guiding students on job search methods leaves no doubt as to where they stand on this issue.

If panicked students are begging your Career Services staff for help during their senior year, there is something seriously wrong with the way your college is preparing students for their job search. in senior year. This means that you and your college are failing your students. So, you should ask yourself three questions: “Will you let your students down again next year?” “Can you help transition your college to a new culture?” “Or, are you going to keep saying, ‘That’s not my job.'”?
