The Route Less Travelled in Selling Yourself to Employers

One of the most tired interview questions asked in Kenya is ‘where do you see yourself five (or ten) years from now’? I think it’s boring because, really, isn’t there another way to ask the same question?

The core of that question is to establish a sense of direction and focus for the interviewee. While I appreciate its value, now that I’m an employer, I know there’s something more important I’m looking for hidden in this overused question.

What I really want to hear said to me in an interview is, ‘what value would you add to my organization if I offered you this job?’

How years of grand corruption affect your job search directly.

Because of our history where for more than a decade there has been a rapid rise in corruption, we have a generation that is not convinced that the commitment to work is worth it. They see many people living comfortably from deception and dishonesty.

This is not meant to paint Kenya as a country of frauds, but the culture of fraud that has been rampant for about two decades has taken root. One effect of those years was a slow growth or non-growth economy. After all, there is a generation that lives day by day in a reality where finding jobs in Kenya is a daunting challenge with over 70% of those in the age bracket of 21 to 35 finding none. that job. It is a state of affairs that they do not do, but they have to live in it.

Although I appreciate that fact, it is important for those directly affected by the culture of grand corruption to work on organizing their activities in a way that supports an honest achievement of their goals, rather than doing the culture that works against them.

A bad work ethic won’t please most employers.

A common complaint from employers is that young people, as the unemployed age group is often referred to, do not like to work.

If the accusation is true, how did it happen?

These are the children of the years of the big corruption ‘success’ stories. They look at a head teacher (just for example) who reports to school on foot because they cannot reach a bicycle let alone a car and rides to a government school as a Principal.

At the end of the first year in office, the Principal who at that time added inches to the belly bought a 4×4 SUV fuel guzzler, and first bought a piece of land; all in one sweep. On the ground, they built a grand school to directly compete with the government they lead. Did the teacher previously have a recognized business? Oh no!

This generation sees the same head teacher who rarely sits in his office, comes to work drunk, but the only consequence of that behavior is a lot of money to be spent even though the standards of the government school that they run went to the dogs.

Now it is the same graduate that the boss has in their hands. They want to be paid more for doing less and make it difficult for employers to run efficient companies.

They know through observation that jobs don’t require someone to add any value to the organization, but the money must flow. It is second to impossible to convince employees with this mindset that they can take home a ‘normal’ salary.

Now that is grossly displeasing to ALL decent and honest employers which is to say the majority. Human Resource is expensive and employers prefer to get rid of employees who have this wrong work ethic.

A unique breed has a great value in competition for jobs.

A potential employee who can tell an employer as early as possible that they have the right work ethic is the one who will be able to quickly sweep the employer into their organization. They are rare and therefore a valuable breed.

The easiest way to show an employer that you have the right work ethic is to show that you are thoughtful in your job search efforts.

Hastily produced CVs and poorly crafted job objective statements won’t get you a second glance. The most important telltale sign is the glaring lack of background research displayed by many candidates seeking jobs in Kenya.

Candidates for jobs that need time to do a thorough background search of the organization they are applying for a job, showing a good ability to communicate their skills and company competencies, showing that they know what their skills and value are. added to the organization are job seekers who choose to take the road less traveled to find work in Kenya.

Such seekers are of greater value in the eyes of an employer than any grade, first, second or third, can be. To show that you know that employment means to value an organization will do wonders for you in the Kenyan jobs scene.
