West Virginia University Mountaineers

The West Virginia University Mountaineers get their nickname from the mountainous terrain of the Morgantown, WV area where the college’s campus is located. Founded in 1867, the school with nearly 30,000 students has a proud sports tradition with both boys and girls teams wearing uniforms that read Mountaineers.

The term “mountaineer” became the mascot of West Virginia University (often abbreviated to WVU) in 1890. Each year students compete to describe the mascot for sporting events held at home and on the road. While the vetting process that includes a minimum GPA requirement, essays, interviews, and a tryout in front of a live game crowd may sound overwhelming to those unfamiliar with the process the reward for achieving the respected position a scholarship and the best seat in the house (the sidelines) for every sporting event. For many students the rewards are more than worth the hassle of subjecting themselves to the testing process.

The history of the West Virginia Mountaineers dates back to the congressional passage of the 1862 Morril Land Grant Act that paved the way for many state universities that today play a major role in America’s most enviable higher education system in the world. . The Morrill Act gave ownership of certain federal lands to the states with the understanding that the states receiving the land would build colleges on the sites or sell the land to raise funds to build state-run universities in other locations. The Morrill Act which was directly responsible for the creation of WVU and many other public colleges across the country played a major role in shaping the American landscape.

Today the West Virginia University Mountaineers compete at the highest level in the Big East Conference with 16 full time schools and one affiliated school. The curiosity that is the associated school has to do with the January, 2006 inclusion of the Loyola University Maryland (located in Baltimore) women’s lacrosse team. The University of Pittsburgh Panthers is the biggest conference rival for the West Virginia University Mountaineers as the football and basketball programs have a history of intense rivalries with their neighbors 75 miles to the north.

For many West Virginia University Mountaineer alumni their favorite school tradition to remember fondly is the long-held tradition of singing a certain harmonious tune first performed by the late John Denver in 1971. Hearing the words to the country music classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is enough to send most West Virginia fans back to the days when they stayed in the stadium after home football games and collectively sang along. the song of West Virginia along with 60,000 other fans and the winning football team.
