Are You at Risk of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome After Having Your Tubes Tied?

Every year hundreds of thousands of women in the USA choose to undergo a form of female sterilization known as tubal ligation which means having their fallopian tubes tied. The main goal of this particular procedure is to prevent the male’s sperm from reaching the egg to fertilize it after being released from the ovary. Although most women who have their tubes tied do not suffer any adverse reactions, a percentage (up to 37%) of these women may develop post tubal ligation syndrome (PTLS).

There are some women who have a greater risk of developing this condition than others according to some studies that have been done. Below we will look at who women are and what can cause them to suffer from PTLS after having their fallopian tubes tied.

Who is at Risk for Developing Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

The answer to this question is divided into two sections: age and the way the pipes are tied. Those women who have their tubes tied by cauterizing them rather than using clips or rings have a much higher risk of developing this particular condition. In fact, as one doctor said, “…mid-segments tubal ligations are the worst type and are the most common cause of post-tubal ligation syndrome.” He mentions the Pomeroy and Irving-type tubal ligations as traumatic but the Mareaski clips and other types as less traumatic. Another type that is also harmful is bi-polar cauterization or coagulation. This information is contained within the transcript of an interview on the obgyn.net website.

Women in their 20s seem to be at greater risk of developing post tubal ligation syndrome after tubal ligation than those who had the procedure done in their 30s or 40s. “Women who underwent sterilization between 20 and 29 years of age had more menstrual irregularities than women who underwent the procedure after age 30.” says a study posted on the pubmedcentral.nih.gov website that summarizes information from another study. This additional study further states that the risk of women in their 20s to be hospitalized due to “menstrual disorders” is 600% greater after sterilization.

What Causes Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

First, there is no definite answer to this question although there are two theories. Any theory of real causation leads to the same cause of the problem. The main reason for a woman developing this particular condition after having her tubes tied is believed to be a drastic decrease in the amount of estrogen or progesterone hormone levels in her body. This can be a result of the blood supply to the ovaries being affected during the procedure. Or it can be caused by damage to the receptor cells.

While some studies show changes in hormone levels after having your tubes tied

http://www.biomedexperts.com/Abstract.bme/8030455/Changes_in_ovarian_function_after_tubal_sterilization others say they find no changes. But even one of the latter type of studies of more than 200 articles on the subject says, “Despite the many differences in research findings, it appears that women 20- 29 years old with previous histories of menstrual dysfunction is increasing. risk of some post-tubal sterilization symptoms.” while at the same time concluding that “… although they do not appear to undergo significant hormonal changes.”

The reason is that women who suffer from post tubal ligation syndrome know that changes, including physical changes, are made in their lives after having their tubes tied. It doesn’t matter what doctors who haven’t gone through it believe or can prove their satisfaction. After all, it’s not the first time that doctors don’t believe something until it becomes too widespread for them to believe anymore (happens to all of us).

All of this will do you little good, however, if you are the one suffering from post tubal ligation syndrome. What you want to know is how you can get rid of the pain. The answer to that is tubal reversal. This is a surgical procedure that ties your tubes back and forth. And it will have an incredible impact on your life if you want relief from this syndrome.
