Law Enforcement Exam Strategies – How to Pass the B-PAD (Behavioral Personnel Assessment Device)

What is BPAD (Behavioral Personnel Assessment Device)?

SHOW TIME… BPAD, also known as Video Simulation Exercise is an assessment exercise that requires you to watch a scenario on a TV monitor. The scenario represents what police officers experience on the job. You will be asked to answer as the people on the screen are talking to you. Knowledge of police procedures is not required for this test. But it definitely helps. Most experienced police officers do very well in this part of the test.

It evaluates the interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills of an individual in dealing with different people in difficult situations, such as those encountered by the police. So the more you know how officers respond to a variety of difficult interpersonal situations the better you will perform on the B-Pad.

Basics of B-PAD

When taking BPAD you watch video-based simulations on a TV or computer monitor. The simulations are based on real-life interpersonal police encounters. Then you are expected to respond verbally, as if talking to real people in real situations. Your responses are videotaped and then scored using standardized criteria. It is based on the premise that the best indicator of future behavior is observed behavior under similar situations.

Important Tip:

By presenting your answers in a logical sequence, you will increase your marks. This will show the reviewers that you think you are reasonable and have planning and organizational skills. The examiners do not score you for finding the perfect solution, but how well you find a solution and communicate your findings.

BPAD Tests Your People Skills

As a law enforcement officer you must be able to work effectively with people?” The B-PAD video tests assess your people skills and common sense judgment. You will not be tested on your job knowledge or personality; rather you will be tested on your interpersonal. The B-PAD measures behavioral skills and abilities that cannot be easily measured by conventional methods.

Why do Law Enforcement Agencies use B-PAD for testing?

The B-PAD is a preferred form of testing because it is a valid and fair method of evaluating candidate behavior under test conditions. For example, the oral interview requires candidates to state what they would “do” in response to a hypothetical situation, on the other hand the B-PAD requires the candidate to demonstrate his or her skills by role-playing an answer. .

What to expect when getting BPAD

When you take the BPAD you will receive oral and written instructions. Then you will again receive instructions from the video moderator and you will be given the opportunity to watch and respond to a practice scenario. Scenarios depicting incidents such as an angry citizen, angry motorist, a disobedient employee, etc. Each scenario is from one to two minutes long. When the scenario is over, the word “answer” appears on the screen and you have a set time (usually about 45 seconds) to answer the scenario as if you were answering real people in a real situation.

How to prepare for B-Pad

You prepare for the B-Pad the same way you prepare for the role playing exercise. It’s essentially the same thing except, instead of reacting to a real person you’re reacting to a video tape.

Irate Citizen Performance Tips:

The Irate Citizen exercise tests the candidate’s ability to analyze and correct citizen-related problems and to calm an angry citizen. The angry Citizen on the video tape will be hostile and test the candidate’s ability to maintain his composure and manage stress.

Raters will assess communication, interpersonal sensitivity, judgment and professionalism. Your success in this exercise depends on your ability to demonstrate these qualities.

Example of an angry Citizen exercise:

You may receive a note that reads something like this; Officer Jones located Joseph Smith at 1218 North 78th Street regarding a citizen complaint. A squad was there before and the citizen was not happy with the service.

The candidate knocks on a door and the video tape starts: The citizen opens with a statement like: “I can’t believe you finally got here. I called four times.”

The angry citizen continues by saying things like; “The reason I originally called was because someone had broken into my car and it took the squad 45 minutes to get there. They just took information, they didn’t take fingerprints and they left.”

Suggested Answer —

“Hi, I’m Officer Jones, I’m sorry for your inconvenience. Although you called four times, I only received the call about ten minutes ago. I came here as soon as possible to help you with the problem. “

The candidate must fight the anger of the citizen as he tries to solve the problem. This is a scheme to test the candidate’s reaction. If the candidate gets agitated and loses his composure, he will fail the exercise.

Always Remember Part of the Test is Your Strength.

If the candidate remains calm and continues to try to solve the problem, the angry citizen player is usually told by the test administrators to calm down. If the candidate can do this, he will get high marks for this exercise. Strategy:

Things to remember when dealing with an angry citizen:

1. Your role-playing.

2. You represent the organization.

3. Your role is to: a. Calm down an angry citizen. b. Offer solutions to help solve citizen problems.

4. How you handle stress and maintain your composure is part of the test.

5. Remain calm and respectful at all times.

6. Use logic and be professional.

7. Explain the organization’s policy but don’t apologize for it.

8. Track time limits. Solve the problem before time runs out.

9. Indicate that you will talk to all parties involved, investigate the complaint and get back to the citizen with the results of your investigation. Give specific dates and times to get back to the angry citizen with results.

Example of an angry Angry Motorist:

You pull over a female driver, she gets out of her car, comes up to you yelling about how you harassed her because she’s a female and asks if you do that to all female drivers. He then took out his D/L and threw it on the ground.

Suggested Answer.

You say to the girls, “I need you to get your Drivers License and give it to me. Then get in your car and I’ll come with you for a while.” If he doesn’t comply, say, “please get back in your car.” You then take the driver’s license and issue him a littering ticket as well as the original citation.

Be polite, but be assertive when you have to. Always remember, YOU MUST control the scene – don’t let them control you. BPAD can be a little scary but if you keep these principles and concepts in mind when taking it you will have a better chance of success.
