Why Don’t Asian Students Ask Questions in Class?

When I was about to start my first teaching assignment in Asia, a colleague with a lot of experience teaching abroad told me to get a lot of lesson material. When I asked why, he said, “Because Asian students don’t ask”. In Canada, the US or other Western countries it is normal to have a question and answer period at the end of the lesson. In Asia, forget it! Unless you have a class of students studying abroad, you’ll probably enjoy the sound of silence.

Why don’t they ask? Let me answer that from my teaching experience in Thailand. This is true throughout Asia and may vary in degree. A young child in Thailand is taught that ‘father knows best’. No need to think. Dad will tell you what to do. In school, the teacher knows best. Copy what the teacher put on the board. That’s what happens in the exam. There is little transfer of learning. Change the wording on the exam and most students will probably not be able to answer the question.

Later, in business, you don’t have to think, your boss will tell you what to do. Granted, this may be a simplified view but essentially this is what happens.

Now, add to that the concept of ‘face’ which is widespread throughout Asia although almost unknown in North America and other Western countries. When a student asks a question in class, he leaves himself open to two possible ‘face loss’ scenarios. By questioning, it means that a) even the teacher is not able to explain the subject well enough for the student to understand – thus opening a loss of face situation for the teacher in front of the class, or) the students are too much. dumbly understood what the teacher said and that is why the student lost face among his classmates. Although it may seem funny to some and a bit strange to others, believe me, it is a fact of life in Asia – at least in the eastern countries.

Since no situation is good to begin with, it’s best to avoid the problem by not asking the question – at least not in class. The student may choose to speak with the teacher outside the classroom after class or later when no one else is around. Loss of face is a serious issue in Asia, which can be fatal. I miss you. Teachers in Western countries with newly arrived Asian students should at least know the ‘face’. These students became ‘westernized’ immediately.

I think the situation is changing because more and more students are exposed to western thinking, teaching and culture but within Asian traditions die hard.

The issue of ‘face’ goes hand in hand with a concept I call ‘The Cyborg Effect’. If you remember the Cyborg from Star Trek with their huge metal cube, these creatures function as individual bodies but one linked mind. In Thailand, students usually work in pairs. Ask a student a question and you usually won’t get an immediate answer. The student turns to his partner and talks. You will then receive a collective response. In some ways this is good. However, this makes it difficult to assess individual student knowledge.
