Is Target Marketing Ethical?

Marketing to specific consumer groups, or target marketing, is one of the most important marketing concepts.

Marketers, throughout the ages, have known who their customers are, and directed their efforts to influence their purchasing decisions. That’s their job.

In the last 30 years however, marketers have begun to identify potential buyers based on multiple factors, which makes many people uncomfortable. Marketers now direct promotions to certain age groups, gender, race, marital status, gender preference, and any other category you can put people into.

This has made many consumers and consumer advocates question the ethics of these promotions:

Is it reasonable to direct ads to children if they do not have the understanding and/or ability to judge what is being presented to them?

Is it fair to target ads to seniors, who live on fixed incomes, with products they can’t afford?

Should companies be allowed to make products specifically targeted at ethnic groups?

My answer to each of these questions, except the first, is definitely, Yes.

Why should a company be restricted from selling a product to an independent, rational thinking, adult?

Shouldn’t I, as an adult, have the ability to determine for myself, with a few exceptions, what I want to buy?

Now, when there are mental disability issues we have a whole separate issue to deal with.

However, assuming that the consumer can make their own decisions; Shouldn’t I as a marketer be able to present information that will help the consumer decide that my product is what they want?

Is targeting minorities exploitative? Yes, it really is. However, so is almost all forms of marketing. You are trying to take advantage of a need, a want and definitely a gap in a market that may not yet be met.

Prior to the 1960s most marketing ignored ethnic minority groups and concentrated the enormous purchasing power of larger demographic groups. There is an opportunity for companies to address a market, with significant purchasing power, that has not been addressed before. Is that inherently wrong? That’s how marketing works: Find a gap, create a plan to address the gap, and then sell that gap. That’s good business practice. If companies do not take advantage of their opportunities they will fail.

Now, none of what I said above gives companies a free license to do whatever they want, especially when it comes to my one, absolute exception: Marketing to children and those who cannot be held accountable for their actions. Even as an adult, if I am not able to choose the goodness of a purchase decision, then I should not be subjected to marketing that has an unreasonable influence on me; And children are certainly not capable of making that decision. However, as an adult parent, I must accept some responsibility for purchasing products marketed to children. I have to teach my children what is right and what is wrong; what is a want versus what is a need; what is cheap vs what is not.

Companies that choose to direct their marketing efforts to specific market segments have a responsibility to consider the ethical implications of what they do. Socially responsible marketing calls for targeted marketing that serves not only the interests of the company, but also the interests of the target audience and the public in general.
