Was I a Child With Special Needs and Didn’t Know It?

One of the most challenging questions for the mental health profession to address in the last few decades is the simplest: why are there more children diagnosed with ‘special needs’ today than ever before? are we still children? There is no definitive ‘good’ or ‘correct’ answer to that question, but as many adults have discovered – far too many – they have suffered because they were not diagnosed correctly at a young age.

The Adult ‘Special Needs’ Checklist

If you have 6 or more of the following symptoms, consider strongly talking to your doctor about the possibility that you have a disability such as ADHD that is preventing you from enjoying your own potential. Are you:

• Bad spelling, even given enough time to correct yourself?

• Take a long time to get to the point of a conversation — or particularly an argument?

• Often accused of speaking too loudly or too slowly?

• Do people make fun of you for using too many ‘filler sounds’ (ie ‘uh,’ ‘um,’ ‘you know’)?

• Have messy writing with lots of cross-outs and write-overs?

• Find yourself reading the same sentence or paragraph over and over again because it didn’t make sense the first time?

• Always mispronounce words even though you know the correct pronunciation?

• Often fail to complete all tasks assigned to you at work, even if you have a checklist?

• Often have to ask for instructions to be repeated to you after the task should have been well started?

• Make a lot of careless mistakes, to the point where you are accused of not paying attention to the subject?

• Confused by letters and numbers that look similar?

• Write letters, memos, or instructions in a disorganized, confusing manner?

• Lose important things on a regular basis, even after making efforts to track them down?

• Fail to understand charts and graphs?

• Lose track of, underestimate, or overestimate how much time has passed or how much time a task should/should take?

• Always get lost?

• Always mix up your right and left?

Why Diagnosed Now?

You may feel like it’s too late for you – at age 35 or over, you may be out of range for most forms of intervention. But the truth is that many adults who suffer from minor to moderate disabilities only discover their condition because they recognize their own characteristics in the diagnostic tests used on their children. . For adults in that situation, a formal diagnosis can be a huge psychological step forward in their lives: from seeing themselves as “unlucky” or “destined to fail” to seeing well themselves have a certain challenge to understand and overcome.

The power of having a name to give to your problems — or, more fundamentally, to recognize that your problems have a definite source — can often be liberating for an adult who suffer from a learning disability. There is a lot of knowledge about these disabilities out there; once you understand that it applies to you, you can take advantage of the great effect.
