Prophecy – Prophetic Symbols
Understanding Figurative Images of God.
You experience dreams, visions and have prophecy spoken in your life. Some of these may be quite obvious while other elements are full of mystery. God’s prophetic language can take many forms and be expressed in different images. God now reveals the meaning of His figurative language so that His people can understand what He has released through the prophetic kingdom. A complete book is needed to fully study this topic but in this article I want to lay down some principles and share some examples that will help you.
Let me recommend first that if you have a dream, a prophetic vision or receive a prophetic word but always write it down. Otherwise, many details can be completely lost in a short time. If you received a prophetic word from a prophet(tess) then ask them to explain what they saw and the meaning of what they felt. If it is a vision or dream, I recommend that you make descriptive notes. You can search your Bible for any images or types described to see what the image is expressing in the scriptures. There are many free electronic Bibles online that include word searches and study aids so they can be very helpful.
It is important to prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to bring insight to you. He is the author of the dream so He has the details. However, he works on details that are meaningful to you. He always uses experiences, memories and settings that are unique to you. Someone else may not understand them in the same light as you. For example, seeing a hot stove can bring feelings of warmth, family, comfort and peace to a person. For a person who sees a hot stove in a dream can create feelings of fear or pain because they were badly burned when they fell on a stove as a child. It is in these scenarios that God may be guiding the first person to comfort, a sense of security or relationship. In the second example, God may be inviting that person to freedom from childhood fears. So ask Him to identify areas that may reveal a deeper work of reconciliation within you.
Let me focus on the images. There are so many images in the Bible that God uses, so discuss them in a concordance. See if it relates to what you received. Jesus often used parables to illustrate spiritual truth. The lamp represents light and guidance, while the net represents the harvest. Familiarize yourself with it through word searches and note the application, if any in your encounter.
When interpreting a dream it is important to look at the emotional, spiritual and circumstantial content within that dream. Is it scary, peaceful, inspiring or threatening? Do the specifications provide direction or promise of provision? Does the dream detail the issues to be prayed for? Is the dream a training module where the Lord is putting you through a test or equipping session? Question – why this and not that? Some unresolved issues in dreams are not important. If there are details that you don’t notice (such as color or size etc.) they probably don’t matter.
Let’s look at some examples of dream symbols:
open collar = open, no hidden, relaxed, informal plans,
white shirt = formal, strict, leadership, management,
