Faith Is An Abstract Noun

Faith can be a misuse of the word, inside and outside the church. Inside, when asking which church a person belongs to, we often hear, “What faith do you belong to?” when addressed is: “What Church or sect do you?” Outwardly we hear, “I have no faith in government – in public education – in marriage.” if intended is: “I have no confidence of the government, etc.” Misuse outside the church is easily remedied by inserting the correct word. Inside the church, however, is misuse – because faith is the basic method where we approach God – may suggest a serious problem. Prudence comes more easily with a better understanding of the English language and through a deeper study of God’s Word and His inspired writers in general- the.

The word faith in English grammar is a noun. Traditionally, nouns are the names of people, places or things. Nouns also have different forms. There are proper nouns that are capitalized and common nouns that are not. There are concrete and abstract nouns. Concrete nouns refer to something that can be understood, that can be seen, heard, touched, etc.: shoes, soup, grass, teacher. Abstract nouns, on the other hand, refer to a quality, condition, action, or state of being that cannot be directly understood – that is, seen, heard, touched: faith, love, courage, honor.

Concretely, I understand. For example, just one look at my old garden shoes tells me almost everything there is to know about them: dirty, white sneakers with cracked soles; broken laces, carelessly tied, stained with paint, grass and who remembers what. I can see them, touch them, smell them and, to prove a point, I can even taste them. Abstract, on the other hand, I don’t understand easily. It is unclear, out of focus, out of reach, out of place around. One look is not enough. In order to achieve the right understanding of faith, I need to be taught.

Fortunately, I was taught by parents, church teachers and many good church history writers. Four examples: (1) The writer of Hebrews, a book of the Bible, gives a brief definition of faith in chapter 11 verse 1: “Now faith is the confidence of things hoped for, the evidence of things that are not seen…” (KJV) (2) The Apostles’ Creed expands the definition and provides the requirements of saving faith. (3) The Heidelberg Catechism of 1563, with its 129 questions and answers, gave the church one of its most extended definitions. (4) After 450 years, Heidelberg needs some decipher and one of the best books available is that of Dr. GI Williamson, The Heidelberg Catechism, A Study Guide.

Finally, perhaps faith is best understood, not by its definition, but by its purpose. A rare example found as a Theological Note on The Study of the Reformation Bible entitled, “Faith and Works,” reads, “Faith is the means or instrument by which a man is saved. Christians are justified before God by faith and by faith they live in their life and sustains their hope… secured by Jesus Christ… called by the gospel as the gospel is made to be understood by the grace of the Holy Spirit. Christian faith is a personal act, involving the mind , heart, and will,… directed toward a personal God, not an idol or an idea.”

My old sneakers are only worth a look, but the abstract noun belief worthy of deep study of the Bible and serious consideration of the work of inspired writers in general. “What do I believe in?” May my answer always be, “The faith expressed by the Apostles’ Creed; the way in which I am saved; the way in which I stand before God in the righteousness of Christ; the way in which I gain eternal life. “
