The Importance of Father-Daughter Relationships

In Today’s busy world, Fathers have very little time to participate in the nurturing and development of their children. “Fathers bring a unique presence, a special energy to raising children,” says a clinical psychologist Ray Guarendia, in his book “Back to the Family.”

How true it is of raising daughters! Just as there is a special bond between mothers and sons, the relationship between fathers and daughters is unique. So fathers cannot afford to remain isolated characters in their daughters’ lives. Parenting is a joint venture, with fathers as active participants as mothers.

There are various reasons why father involvement may be limited.

o Ambitious and overworked Fathers prioritize their work over the well-being of their families. They come home too tired to spend quality time with their children. Usually the kids were asleep when they got back, and from school before Dad woke up.

o Absent Dads: Those with travel jobs such as airline pilots, sales representatives, businessmen or long distance truck drivers may be away from home often, sometimes for long periods of time.

o Divorced Fathers with limited visitation rights also do not spend enough time with their children.

o The false ideas that girls should be raised exclusively by mothers or women at home, make men distance themselves from their daughters. They feel bad about showing affection, and so they lose what little intimacy they can share with their daughters.

The word “Papa” is universal. It promotes the virtues of responsibility, protection, love, and discipline. Being a father can be a rewarding job, and a man who shirks his responsibility is missing his God-given role. John Rosemond a Family Counselor, wrote in one of his articles that a father should not only be present but ‘actively involved’ and ‘a strongly interested participant’ in the process of raising a child.

Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of India, spent a long time in jail during the struggle for India’s independence. He deeply regretted his separation from his beloved daughter Indira, but he continued to contact her through letters, which were later compiled in a book “Glimpses of World History.” These letters express his deep love for her and the ease with which he expresses it.

“Priyadarshini, dear to my eyes but still dear to my heart…..”

“I think of the day when the three of us shall meet again, and the thought of it lightens and makes my heart happy.”

Even without him, he awakened his interest in the history of the World, Science and Politics, which contributed in no small measure to the formation of his character.

Or who can forget Father William Jackson Smart who raised six children alone in rural Washington and his daughter Senora Dodd, who fought for Fathers’ Day, as a dedication to fathers like him .

To be a good father, one must know some important requirements.

or Show Love. No father should be ashamed to show affection to his daughter. A touch, a hug, a special smile, and three little words “I love you” are tangible ways to communicate love. He learned to reciprocate that love. This was her first male-female relationship with her father, and would influence her behavior towards her husband later in life. The earliest reflection of herself as a woman came from her dad. How does he treat her? Does she accept him without question? Or does he treat him as inferior to his brother? When he shows respect, he feels worthy as an individual. When he ignores her or is overly critical, she feels worthless.

o Show love and respect to his mother. A good and loving relationship between parents is the foundation of his evolution into a happy, balanced child. It gives him a sense of security, and a good opinion about marriage.

o Shared Activities: A good father will show interest in his daughter’s activities. Make him feel good about his abilities and achievements. He can find something to praise. A father should be the leader of his daughter’s happiness. Doing things together like reading, walking, playing is time well spent. He will also learn to see things through his eyes as he walks him through his wonderland. Time is a very precious gift.

o Communication: Listening and paying attention to what a daughter has to say is a way of showing love. What seems silly to an adult may bother a child. He should be encouraged to talk about his problems at school, peer pressure, studies or any conflict situations. A good father will help him find solutions to his problems. He will teach without reproach. He may be free to express his opinions and open to advice.

o Respect: A girl should be treated as a person and not as property. His right to privacy and his space to grow must be respected.

o Honesty: The honesty of his son makes a father trustworthy in his estimate. His questions should be answered intelligently. He must be taught to distinguish between right and wrong, honesty and dishonesty. He should not be forced to do what he does not want to do by offering inducements, or threats or emotional manipulation.

o Discipline: “Discipline is one of the most loving, strong gifts a parent can give to their child,” said Gaurendi. It must be consistent, fair and administered with love. When training a child in the way he should walk, the father must make sure that he himself goes through it. The task of parenting is overwhelming. It is interesting to see men who take family responsibility seriously, and are loving and compassionate. The way a father speaks, the words he uses, the tone of his voice can be encouraging or discouraging. The reliability and Integrity he learned from his father would prepare him for the ‘school of hard knocks’ he would have to go through on his journey to adulthood.

The relationship between father and daughter reaches a critical stage when she is a teenager. This period should be negotiated with tact and efficiency. She needs to be sure that he appreciates her as an intelligent and independent person. Knowing his daughter’s sexuality makes many fathers uncomfortable. Suddenly he felt low on his list of priorities. Right now, she is the center of his universe. Now his eyes began to wander and focused on other men. He wanted to dress differently and behave differently. Some fathers do not manage these changes well. They may react by overprotecting or exaggerating.

o Overprotective: In a society that does not value modesty or sexual purity, Dad is afraid that his beloved girl may go astray. He felt it was his duty to set rules about dating and who he should date, or how he should dress, or what company he should keep. This ‘paternal neurosis’ is undesirable. The woman felt restricted. On the one hand he may feel insecure, as if he is unable to take care of himself. On the other hand, he may want to break free from this ‘restriction of love’ before it hinders his emotional growth.

o Prejudice: Daughters tend to rebel against dictatorial fathers. If strict rules are imposed that she thinks are unnecessary, if he restricts her activities she may fear him or hate him. There is a distinct tendency to rebel. The father must be sensitive to the growing needs of his daughter and make allowances accordingly. He must negotiate fairly, allowing him to gain confidence and pride in his choices. But he also needs to explain to her that choices have consequences.

A daughter considers her father a standard by which she can estimate the worth of other men. If he is well behaved, trustworthy, honest and loving, he will look for the qualities of other men. He should be a praying father as well as he shows the unconditional love of God our father. Child psychologist Phyllis Bronstein says that while a mother teaches nurturing and care, a father teaches physical prowess, self-confidence in expressing opinions, and adventure. Children with good fathers associate with other people and successful people. While those who were neglected by their fathers showed low IQ, poor school performance, and delinquency.

If fathers are abusive, hot-tempered, irresponsible or drunk, this also has a negative effect on daughters. They look for similar characteristics in husbands or lovers. Regardless of the damage it can do to them physically, psychologically and emotionally, this ‘father hunger’ forces them to seek out such men, hoping that eventually things will change. One father said, “If I cheat, he’ll spend the rest of his life in a ‘screw up.’ I don’t want that to happen.”

Too much molly coddling is unhealthy and can lead to ‘father fixation.’ This type of wrong parenting can cause the Electra Complex – a psychological term for a woman’s romantic feelings towards her father, and anger towards her mother. Carl Jung called this the “Female Oedipus Attitude.” It can even lead to an incestuous relationship between father and daughter.

An anonymous poet has this advice for fathers:

“Look at yourself and think of your child,

Your time and your thoughts belong to him;

Because how will you answer the Lord when he asks

What kind of father are you?”
