The New GRE – Sentence Highlighting

Another new type of question in the new (revised) GRE coming in August 2011 is called sentence highlighting. That’s not an “official” name, but it describes what you need to do to answer the question. Vocabulary questions are a new type of question used to test your reading comprehension abilities.

We’re all familiar with the standard multiple choice reading comprehension question – given a passage (about the most boring subject in the world, usually), choose the correct answer from four or five choices. At this point in your life, whatever your background, you probably have to do what millions of them feel; if you’ve ever taken a test prep course like Testmasters, then you probably know that the basic principle for answering these questions is “justify your answer with evidence directly from the text!” If you cannot find a sentence in the passage that supports your answer, then it is incorrect.

It’s good that ETS decided to take this concept to a literal level – find a sentence in the passage that answers the question and highlights it.

Let’s look at an example.

Recently some scientists have concluded that meteorites found on Earth and long believed to be of Martian origin may have broken up without the gravity of Mars due to the impact of Mars on other meteorites. This conclusion leads to another question: whether meteorite impacts on Earth similarly brought rocks from this planet to Mars.

According to astronomer SA Phinney, kicking a rock hard enough to free it from Earth’s gravity would require a meteorite to create a crater more than 60 miles wide. Furthermore, even if the rocks on Earth were ejected by the meteorite impact, Mars’ orbit is much larger than Earth’s so Phinney estimates that the probability of these rocks hitting Mars is about one-tenth as great. of Mars rocks hitting Earth. To demonstrate this approximation, Phinney used a computer to calculate where 1,000 hypothetical particles would go if fired from Earth in a random direction. He found that 17 out of 1,000 particles will hit Mars.

The very first sentence of the passage explains that “meteorites found on Earth…may have exploded outside of Mars’ gravity due to the impact of Mars on other meteorites.” So, the answer is the first sentence; we will navigate our mouse over this sentence and click on the sentence (any part of it) to highlight it, then submit our answer.

Because the GRE is a computerized exam, you do not need to bring a highlighter to the testing center. All you have to do is click on (any part of) the sentence that contains your answer, and it will automatically highlight the entire sentence. The whole idea may seem unusual at first, but it’s actually no different than the reading comprehension questions you’re used to. As with multiple choice questions, you have to find the sentence in the passage that directly answers the question – except now you have to do it!
