Does the Theory of Evolution Fully Explain Our Natural Origins?

The conflict between science and religion is partly because religion has a terrible flaw. These are religious people who claim that the Bible is literally true as a source of knowledge about our natural origins. The Darwinian perspective quickly found creationists within mainstream academia. So, how do you answer the question about your natural origin? Did the scientists get it right?

The prevailing scientific opinion

Much of how evolution works is now biologically clear. Genetic information is stored in DNA. The genes in the offspring population are a random sample of the genes present in the parent population. This sampling causes variability in adaptability. There is also little change in the genetic material caused by random mutations.

Natural selection is said to result in the reproduction of those organisms that are best suited to their environment. This is the survival of the fittest. The top successful traits are passed down from generation to generation. The characteristics of the children of successful parents differ slightly from the characteristics of the previous generation. Over a long period of time, this resulted in the gradual evolution of plant and animal species.

Man and beast

A historical difficulty with this account is that there is no fundamental difference between humans and animals, which only differ along a continuum. In other words humans are not unique according to science.

Some scientists have tried to argue that chimpanzees for example have language. But now it seems that their bases are limited and that it is misleading to say that they have a language.

Although it is difficult to prove, it seems that self-consciousness is something that is different in humans. This self-reflection makes us meditate and pray as well as worry and give ourselves insomnia. Animals do not have insomnia or suicide.

It is also difficult to see how evolution can provide an account for the development of behavior. It is a multi-faceted phenomenon that includes moral understanding, ideology, resistance to temptation, reactions to transgression, altruistic behavior and so on.

Furthermore, people respond very differently to similar situations. This appears to be due to personal choices that sometimes exceed self-interest. Don’t you feel free to choose to stop or continue reading this article? It seems that no natural factors such as environment or genes can fully account for the way individuals make personal choices especially those related to deeper things.

Finally, I think you don’t consider animals morally culpable: they are not legally responsible. Their behavior may be bad but when you think about it do you blame them for it or say they are just following their nature?

There are so many discontinuities between animal and human behavior that I cannot swallow. It is difficult to see how adaptation from something like a single cell by natural selection can provide a complete account for the development of human self-reflection, courage, honesty, ethical understanding. , ideology, altruism, and resistance to temptation. In my opinion, human consciousness originates from the human soul which is not present in other life forms.

Random in the theory of evolution

Another troubling point, with regard to the scientific account of our origins, is the way in which the idea of non-maleficence continues to emerge — random selection of offspring’s genes, randomness of genetic mutations, and random change in the environment that helps survival.

Perhaps this is not surprising. All science tends to avoid any account of natural phenomena as objective. This is because such accounts are true or false argued beyond the ability of science to judge empirically. There is no room for design in any scientific view of your natural origin. Spiritual belief on the other hand provides something that scientists do not claim to offer – ideas about meaning and purpose. It is believed that natural selection is eternal and does not see the future. It simply accumulates variants that favor circumstances.

And so life, according to science, is an accident.

Emanuel Swedenborg offers us a way of thinking about random chance. He suggests that there is a higher power of Providence working in concert to give us the opportunity to freely choose a holy way of life. According to this view, although the appearance of the senses may point to the operation of chance, he says that in fact it is an illusion that hides a deeper truth that we can only discover using our higher mind. This illusion is said to preserve our freedom from being forced to believe one thing or another. And so it is claimed that Providence sees and unseen flows not only in the general things of the order of the universe but also in the smallest details that none of them happen by chance.

Swedenborg’s view does not deny the truth about the facts of nature that can be shown by science but recognizes the deeper side of human life that is revealed within spiritual thoughts. Science is good at explaining how evolution and heredity happen. But ask yourself if it is necessary to explain why – other than using natural ideas? Perhaps you think there is a place for God in religion in the very laws of nature?
