Does Your College President Interact With Students?

Have you ever experienced something important that you would like to inform the President of your college?

Students, Parents and Alumni may try to contact their College President by Phone, E-Mail or by Letter. Some students may even visit the President’s office. Unfortunately, the most common response most people receive is silence.

Phone calls are often not returned and there is no response to your e-mail message or letter. Many College Presidents have no time or interest in the things that students, parents or alumni think or recommend. However, there is one exception–major donors. If someone donates $10,000 or more, they may get a form letter or message from a staff member. The fact that students are struggling to pay $80,000 to $250,000 for tuition and expenses may not be recognized as a sufficient reason to listen to their concerns and suggestions.

When you try to contact your College President, you may find that they surround themselves with layers of protection and security. Not many can get through. Only the official policy will come out.

Few College Presidents pick up their own office phones or respond to an e-mail message or letter. If by some miracle you can get past an assistant, you will be easily taken to “the man who runs that place.” Then, the assistant who works for that person promises to leave a message for him. Of course, most of the time, you won’t hear back.

On rare occasions, there is a college president who is different. Those College Presidents and some college leaders are looking for ways to collect the information themselves. To hear from their students, they:

1. Designate specific days for questions from students, parents and alumni

2. Make presentations to share information with students and then invite questions

3. Always attend athletic events and socialize with students

4. Find time to visit the cafeteria, student center, dorm and library

5. Hold meetings to hear student’s likes, dislikes, concerns and suggestions

6. Meet regularly with student officials and representatives

7. Walk around campus to chat with students

8. Sometimes sit in on classes

Yes, we all know that College Presidents and College Leaders are busy. However, if college leaders never engage with students to ask about their concerns, they can be seen as apathetic and unresponsive ivy tower leaders.
