Adapting Lesson Plans To Student Ages

One of the main problems with most lesson planning materials is adapting them to specific classroom needs. In several articles, we will list the common problems that usually make the activities unusable for certain types of teachers, and how to solve the problem by adapting the way the activity is presented. We will identify the principles of adapting activities to allow almost any lesson plan to be used, regardless of your learner profile.

Part II. The problem is the age of the student.

Here are solutions and principles for adapting activities to different problems of the student’s age:

1) Mixed age young students and groups of teenagers.

The problem here is that older children can complete the task more easily and feel uncomfortable when paired with a younger student.

Solution: Put the younger students in pairs to do the activity, while the more capable older students work individually. This reduces the impact of young students to slow down the activity, and increases their ability to perform, because two heads are better than one. It also increases the security of young learners and can actually increase the production of the individual student as they are both inclined to ask questions and get answers. This is especially true in information sharing activities such as surveys, role plays, and problem solving.

Principle: Make young students more productive by matching them and improving their abilities.

2) The material reaches the target language but is not appropriate for the age group.

Imagine you are teaching prepositions to adults but you have a picture of a room with toys scattered all over the place and some children playing. It is presented in a children’s style – not what adults usually warm to for classroom material!

Solution: Present the material so that it is relevant to the world of adults. In this case, tell them that they are the parents of the children in the picture. This automatically makes the material acceptable, because it is a realistic adult situation.

Principle: Make the material relevant to students by giving them an age-appropriate perspective on it.

3) Young students who are easily distracted and cannot focus on an activity.

‘I can’t get them to sit for more than five minutes’, is a quote I hear from many teachers I train, and they usually refer to students up to the age of 10. This is a problem when a activity requires students to be confined to a classroom for 10 to 20 minutes! An example of this is an information gap exercise (where students or groups of students are separated and have to ask questions to get information from each other).

Solution: I have found that I can keep children as young as 5 years old in one place if I use a ‘lung’ made of tables and chairs. You don’t even need an excuse for why you set up the class this way. They are happy to stay in their place, and do the work respecting the fact that ‘they’ are there, and ‘we’ are here!

Principle: Use unconventional classroom management techniques to make the physical environment stimulating enough for the student to want to stay where he is.

4) An activity is too complicated in its implementation to explain to the students because they are still young.

I have a group of 10 year old students who need to practice the present simple for likes, dislikes and everyday activities in a ‘free stage’ environment (with minimal teacher interference). I have found some mature material that requires them to share information from playing cards on paper, then use some kind of preference scale to find their ideal romantic partner. The explanation will be long and complicated, and the group is multilingual, so there is no chance to go to the mother tongue. So how to explain?

Solution: don’t! They say a simple picture is worth a thousand words, so skip the explanations. First I asked them how old they were, and then told them to think they were actually 20 years old. They love it. This allows them to identify with the role play cards. Then I did the activity as if I were a student. I brought 2 students to the front of the class as an example, took their information by asking questions, and then compared it on the board, using the preference scale. I chose my favorite one of the two and said I would be his girlfriend. The penny dropped.

Principle: Don’t explain complex activities to young learners. Do it as if you were a student, and let the students ‘see’ what you expect from them.
